THE ROANOKE-GHOWAN TIMES. THURSDAY. APRIL 22 1926 JUNIOR RED CROSS IN THE PRIMARY ROOM 666 is a prescription for Malaria, Chills and Fever Dengue or Bilious Fever. It kills the germs. This organization, if I might call it such, has been the means of creating the greatest interest with little children of anything I have ever tried. Early in the fall the children In my room grades 2 A and Third, became quite anxious to become a part of the “Helping Others’’ program, thereby in their small way doing what they could. The very first meeting, naturally, was one for explanation and election of officers. I had to preside, but I let them do their own nomi nating, vote as each wished, and count the votes afterward. The little fellows seemed to feel proud of themselves when they were allowed to stand and make nomi nations, etc. Today in their meetings they all appear very much at ease. A president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and 2 captains were elected. The captains were to take charge of the pins entirely. They decided as they lost them so easily it would be better to keep them in a special box so the captains pass them once a week. They have meetings regularly on Friday afternoon at 12:45 Usually lasting about 25 minutes. There is a program committee, who with me decide on the kind of entertainment. At all meet ings the little president and se cretary are in front. They carry on the businoBS, I only take part when absolutely necessary. Sometimes the entire program is called “Good Deeds” program. Each child tells a good deed for the week. To my mind this keeps ever in their minds the real meaning of Junior Red Cross, and motto, “I serve.” Always the programs are a part of their words in English; for instance the story is told by the one who told it best in English. School News is an assignment I give them sometimes for busy words, the one written the neat est with fewest mistakes is read There are so many ways in which the Friday afternoon program can be held aloft, with their in terest growing all the while. Beginning Monday of the week of Lincoln’s birthday stories were read concerning his life, then for English they were reproduc ed. On Friday the best ones were used to celebrate his birth day. The following week the same idea was true with Wash ington, then we had a Washing ton and Patriotic program. There are so many ways in which the two words “1 serve” can be interpreted. Junior Red Cross does help thousands of poor, weak. sick, starving child ren. Then I have tried in a simple wav to show it is a tool in the teachers hand. This lit tie band of workers with the one high ideal of service can be counted on to d) things right at home, in the school, things they never dreamed about before. Better results can be obtained in reading, English or any subject when the “Red Cross” is put be fore them. Honestly my child ren will almost work their “heads off” to be on the program. And only through best efforts do they get there. They have given $2 00 to help the Chinese children learn about Jesus and have a good Christ mas. Filled one big Christmas stocking for the sick soldiers at Oteen. They sent a large box of fruit to a poor family in town at Thanksgiving. Have “clean up” day on the play ground as well as in our room. Purchased a globe for our room. At present we are getting money to buy a picture by sell- candy to our playmates. They send fruit each week to members who are sick. There is 35c in the treasury. Does Red Cross pay in the schools? To me it surely does. There is no better proof than tne jolly smile on Johnny’s face when he shows you he is even happier because he gave the orange from his lunch to a sick child who did not have one. We serve at home, we work in school, then the greatest service pehaps is over seas. Every child understands that he in part is doing some thing for people he can never see, still he smiles as he sings: “We help people over the ocean. We help people over the sea. We help people over the ocean. By sending them gifts can’t you see? Red Cross! Red Cress! We aim i to help others today, today. Red Cross! Red Cross! Our motto is service always. Lola M Gotland him from us. but oh, we miss him so! Never more on earth are we to hear his footsteps, nor see his face, nor hear his voice again. He was a loving husband, a kind and indu'gent father, an ever faithful friend and a true Christian. In early life he became a mem ber of Hebron Baptist Church. Later he moved his membership to Ashley’s Grove Church, re maining a consistent member until his death. He was laid to rest in the family burying ground. The services were conducted by his former pastor. Rev. D Gale, as sisted by Rev, W. N. Sheppard. He leaves to mourn their less a loving wife, two eons and five daughters and twenty-nine grand children.
