’ *1 - THE ROANOKE CHOWAN TIMES. THURSDAY. JULY 8. 1926 Selliog Used Uyilnder Oil To Pigs By Geo. Herring, Swine Husbandman, V. P. I. Extension Division Pigs will pay a good price for waste cylinder oil from the car or tractor when it is used in amounts sufficient to effectively control lice and mange. A few years ago the United States Department of Agricul ture conducted some experiments in hog feeding to show the actual loss in dollars and cents due to lice. In one lot it cost $1.00 per hundred more to produce gains on lousy pigs than it did on those free from lice; in a second lot $1.50 more and in a third lot, $2 94 more. The gains on fifteen pigs infested with lice amounted to 1705 pounds, while fifteen pigs free from lice put on 2,085 pounds during the same period. Pigs infested with lice also re quire a higher per cent of protein feed. Some idea as to the value of oil when used to control lice can be gathered from the above. Weanling pigs were examined this spring on over twenty farms and in nearly all cases they were infested with lice, the exception being where the lice were con trolled with applications of oil. Mange was much less common but where it occurred it was do ing more damage than lice. Treatment for hog lice is both simple and inexpensive. Crude oil is very effective but often bard to obtain and for this reason used cylinder oil is recommended. Where the latter is not available on the farm, it can easily be ob tained at garages at a little or no cost. About a pint of kerosene added to each gallon of such oil will add to its effectiveness. There are many ways of apply ing oil but for average conditions the simplest method is to get the pigs in a small pen and sprinkle them with the oil with an old broom. By leaving them in a pen for half an hour or so after wards they will usually do a thorough job of oiling each other. Oiling in the late evening will help to avoid any blistering that might occur from the hot sun. For best results hogs should be treated two or three times at intervals of about ten days there after as often as it appears necessary. The same treatment as described for lice will ordi narily be effective in the treat ment of mange. In extremely bad cases of mange a thorough scrubbing with soap and water preceding treatment will add to its effectiveness. Cleaning and disinfecting the sleeping quarters will help some in controlling both lice and mange.—The Southern Planter. Don’t Try “Just to Get Buy One of the things that costs a lot of us a lot of money is the disposition to let things go just as long as they will answer a purpose. Many a farmer has paid out the price of a new gate, or a new piece of harness, or a new implement, trying “just to get along” for awhile longer with a gate, or a piece of har ness, or an implement that was really worn out out and ready to be replaced. The writer of this pleads guilty to doing the thing himself. He has put up with old fences that made him asham ed every time he looked at them and that cost him a lot of time and worry just because it seemed they ought to do a while longer. He wasn’t economizing by doing it, either, for the new ones had to come in the end, and all the wasted time and thought and self-respect were gone forever. There is seldom any profit in trying “just to get by” with equipment or with anything else. —Southern Agriculturist. Colds Cause Grip and Influenza LAXATIVE BROMO QUININE Tablets remove the cause. At no time is this more true than when water accidents occur. To rescue a drowning person does not require great strength, en durance, nor unusual swimming ability. Like everything else at which you would succeed, you must know how. The average swimmer not versed in life sav ing methods, attempting a rescue stands very much the same chance for success as an auto mobile mechanic would if he tried to fill a tooth. Often he pays for his lack of information and training with his life. The coroner's records are filled with incidents where a double tragedy has followed the attempt of an untrained swimmer to rescue a drowning person. Other people—sometimes those very dear to us—pay the price for our neglect. Every year thousands of picnic parties leave home for a day of recreation at some beach, to return with the corpse of a drowned brother or sister. Over half of all acciden tal drownings are preventable, life saving experts tell us. A wider dissemination of life sav ing instruction and the practice by swimmers of care and good common sense when in the water will materially decrease this ap palling waste of life. It is much easier to do a thing than to wish you had. The Local Bertie County Chapter of the Red Cross, with the aid of an expert from National Headquar> ters in Washington, is offering a course in Life Saving and water safety to every swimmer who cares to take advantage of the opportunity at Colerain Beach, July 8, 9, 10. Many people will be learning in this course how to rescue a drowning person from the water; what to do if, in the attempt, he is caught in the death grips with which drown ing people unconsciously grasp their rescuers; how to hold the water victim under perfect con trol with one arm and swim to the shore with the other; and how to perform resuscitation if the victim is so near drowned that he has stopped breathing. It is earnestly hoped that every one interested in swimming will enroll in the Institute at Cole rain. The insidious thing about it all is that no one knows when a knowledge of life saving shall prove the means of averting tragedy. Those who pass the required tests and enroll in the American Red Cross Life Saving Corps have the comforting as surance that they are well quali fied to act intelligently and ef fectively when water accidents threaten human life. Weeds and Insects Work Together Weeds in and around the gard en harbor both insects and di sease, particularly if the weeds are related to the cultivated plants. Plant lice, red spiders, and other insects invade the garden from neighboring weed borders. Cabbage pests live on wild mustard, shepherd’s purse, and related weeds. Destroy the weeds. Just as soon as any crop is gathered spade up the ground, bury the old remains deeply, and plant something else. Subscribe to The Poanoke-Cho- wan Times—Only $1 per year A. Master of Grange Likes Electricity Permanent good is sure to come of the present co-operative investiga tions of the use of electricity on the farm, according to L. T. Taber, mas ter of the National Grange. Mr. Taber, In an interview just published, says: “A generation ago It would have been supposed that electrical develop ment and the use of electrical energy was of little concern to the farmer; that those in cities and towns were more vitally Interested in this mighty and mysterious power than those who till the soil. ‘‘The last decade has seen a trans formation along the lines of the use of electricity in farm homes and farm work. The farm electrical plant has been most valuable. TTie farmer la many sections will be vitally con cerned In the development of high tension power lines and propOT trans mission of electrical current tor rural uses. ‘‘It is probable that we are yet In Infancy in the use of electricity. This Is obviously true as applied to agricul ture. Any organization that directs its attention toward a better under standing of the relation of electricity to rural life will perform an invalu able service.” NOTICE North Carolina, I In the Su- Northanipton County j perior Ct. COc, Not a Question of Distance There may be some people who feel that "any bank will do"—and for them, of course, the nearest at hand settles the matter. Discriminating depositors, however, prefer to weigh values; to choose their banking connection on its particular merits, for things about it which especially appeal to them. To these people our banking by mail service is in valuable because it enables them to bank here without considering the matter of distance. THE SCOTLAND NECK BANK Scotland Neck, N. C.
