THE ROANOKE - CHOWAN TIMES, THURSDAY. JULY 15, 1926 Roanoke-Chowan Times on account 1 of malaria. The Americans fol lowed them some years later and made the Canal zone a healthy place. If malaria can be con quered in the tropics it can be banished or controled in the fine climate of North Carolina. PUBLISHED EVERY THURSDAY BY ANDREW J. JULY 15. 1926 THE COUNTY ROAD PROPOSITION The prop sed county road law found on another page of this issue is only one of several likely to be submitted at the road meet ing advertised to be held in Jack- son August 18th. It was our in tention to publish all the propos als in one issue, but this we could not do. We understand one proposition IS to incorporate only seventy five or a hundred miles in the county system and leave the oth ers for the townships to keep up, it being claimed that in a county system the roads serving the smaller communities would re ceive no attention, and for proof of this reference is being made to how they fared when all the roads of the county were under a county system prior to 1911. The question of raising the necessary funds to build anc maintain county roads is being freely discussed, some in the townships where bonds have been issued contend that any county system to be adopted should provide for the absorption of the township bonds already issued, contending that it wou'c be unfair to the townships that have already taxed themselves and built roads to now be equally taxed to build in townships that have not been taxed for this pur pose We fear this is the rock that will wreck any proposa that may come up, and we are referring to it at this time that the matter may be fully discuss ed before the August meeting. PRACTICAL HEALTH WORK Rockefeller money is being spent in Northampton in practi cal health work that may mean much for the betterment of large part of our population as well as of material benefit to the whole country from the discover ies made and the lessons learned here. As is well known, John D Rockefeller has given a large amount of money for research work and the study of diseases, and some time ago a branch office was opened at Edenton from which work will be directed in the study of malaria in Eastern Carolina. Dr F. M, Boyd is di rector in charge at Edenton and among other places he has se lected a place in Occoneechee Neck, on the Roanoke in North ampton for field study, and has sent Dr. J. W. Williams and Messrs L T. Coggshead and W. T. Henery who will be located here for quite a while making a survey and studying malaria. Dr. F, M. Russell, of New York, di rector of the International Health Board of the Rockefeller Founda tion spent a few days in the county last week. The work is being carried on on a part of the Ransom and Bu gwyn planta tions in Occoneechee Neck, and the location is said to be ideal for the purposes of the study. These are among the richest farm lands in the country, but the malaria prevalent there in the summer and fall has kept white people away, the native colored population being more or less immune to the dreaded ma laria, which seems to be more prevalent on the large river plan tations.
