Miss Mary Long leaves Wed nesday for Pendleton where she will teach this session. Miss Ida Matthews arrived home Wednesday after spending twelve weeks at U. N.C , Chapel Hill, attending summer school. Mrs. S. V. Edwards and son. James Taylor, spent the week end in Gumberry with her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Taylor. Mrs. J. P. Harrell and grand son, Portsmouth, returned home Saturday-after an extended visit to her parents, Mr. and Mrs, F. E. Foster. Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Cuthrell and children. Port Norfolk, were week-end guests of Mr. and Mrs. M. F. Long. Messrs R. C. and Alexander Davis left Tuesday for Ports mouth for a few days visit to rel atives. Mr. and Mrs. Julian Morgan spent the week end at Tyner visiting friends. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Smith, of Portsmouth, returned home Sun day after a few days visit to Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Kee. They were accompanied home by Mrs. Kee. School will open Thursday morning, 9 o’clock. All patrons and friends are urged to be pres ent. Miss Gertrude Spencer leaves Wednesday for Chowan College, Murfreesboro, where she will be a member of the Freshman Class. Mrs. Robert L. Moore and chil dren, Mildred Lee and R. L. Jr., returned home Monday after spending six weeks at Ocean View. Mr. Gordon Maddrey and Miss Leona Harris spent Monday even ing at Murfreesboro attending a B. Y. P. U. meeting. Mr. and Mrs. H. R. Harris and children, Elizabeth and H. R. Jr., spent Sunday at Petersburg, the guests of Mr. and Mrs John Long. Miss Mary Spencer left Wed nesday for Charlotte where she will teach this session. Messrs Charlie Johnson and Roy Stephenson returned home Sunday after a few days motor trip to Washington and Balti more. Mrs. Lucy Leake, Norfolk, ar rived Thursday for a few days visit to relatives in the vicinity. Miss Mary Ruth Broughton, Hertford, returned home Friday after a ten days visit to her friend. Mrs. J. L. Harris. Mr, Charles Gordon Maddrey left Tuesday for Lewiston where he will again be a member of the high school faculty. Miss Nancy Hudson Barbee was hostess to a large number of her little friends Tuesday after noon from 4 to 6 o’clock honor ing her tenth birthday. Several out door games were played af ter which refreshments consist ing of cream, cake and mints were served. She received many useful gifts. Mr. Thurman Bullock and Miss Ida Long spent the week end in Raleigh, guests of Mr. and Mrs, Thomas Smaw. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Stephen son, Suffolk, were the week end guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Stephenson. Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Baird and children, of Chester, Va., were week end guests of Mrs. Baird’s sister, Mrs. T. J. Stephenson. Prof, and Mrs. T. R. Everett spent Sunday at Conway visiting Boll Weevils Boll weevils are destroying much cotton in Northampton. F. Long. Mrs. Whit Early, Portsmouth, arrived Sunday and is the guest of Rev. and Mrs. D, P. Harris. Mr. Fenton Cordle left Monday for Campbell College, Buies Creek, where he will be a mem ber of the Freshman Class this year. Miss “"Edythe Bradley enter tained a few of her friends Sat urday evening at two tables of bridge. Miss Agnes Edwards received a box of beautiful hand kerchiefs as high score prize and Mrs. Herbert Brown, the guest of honor, received a lovely pair of silk hose. The hostess assist ed by Mrs. H.E. Roensch served a delightful salad course. Those' playing were, Mesdames W. G. Edwards, H. E. Roensch, Ethel Sedberry, Herbert Brown, Kit- trell, A.J, Crocker, Herbert Har ris, T.R. Everett and Miss Agnes Edwards. Miss Marguerite Maddrey spent the week end in Norfolk, guest of her sister. Miss Josie Maddrey Miss Agnes Edwards left Mon day for Lumberton where she will be a member of the high school faculty. Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Jones re turned home Saturday after a month’s visit to relatives at Greenwood, Fla. and Reidsville. Mr. T. B. Miss Alice Kelly Harris left Thursday for Elkin where she will be a membar of the high school faculty for the second year. Messrs S. V. Edwards and Crocker Maddrey spent Friday in Morehead City fishing. Miss Nancy Hudson Barbae spent the week end in Raleigh the guest of her uncle, Mr. M.R. Stephenson. Mr. and Mrs. Julian Morgan spent a few days at Vandemere the past week on a fishing party. Miss Marion Harris left Tues day for Meredith College, Ral eigh, where she will be a mem ber of the Sophomore Class. Beale and Miss Geor gia Coggin were quietly married on last Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the home of the bride’s mother at Milwaukee, Rev. C.M. Billings officiating, assisted by Rev. A. T. Howell. Only a few relatives were present. Mr. Beale is one of Potecasi’s most promis ing young men, while Mrs. Beale is the very charming and attrac tive daughter of Mrs. Mary Lee Coggin of Milwaukee. The happy pair left immediately after the ceremony for Raleigh and other places of interest and will make their home in Fayetteville where they will teach the coming year. Misses Helen and Margaret Britt, of Mapleton, were week end guests of Miss Gladys Lassi ter. Mrs. L. M. Beale and little daughter, of Virginia, were the guests of her mother last week. The revival services closed Fri day evening with fifteen addi tions to the church. Rev. A. T. Howell, of Greensboro, assisted the pastor and did some very good preaching. Mr. Roy Holland and family, of Norfolk, are visiting Mr. and Mrs. W. A, Davis. Mesdames Dallas Barnes and Clyde Stephenson and families, of Severn, were guests of Mrs. A. J. Harrell Friday. S. & S. Club Meeting The Spick and, Spandy Club of Woodland met at the home of Janie Outland on Wednesday af ternoon, August 31. The busi ness was conducted by. the presi dent, Julia Love Griffin, after which a very entertaining and profitable program was rendered. The hostess then served grape juice and cakes. This club is about three years old. The members are Emily Lane, Julia Love Griffin, Claire Henthall, Mary Lois Parker, Teeny Liverman, Janie Outland and Julia Parker. A new mem ber, Mary Parker, was admitted to the club at the last meeting. The girls meet twice per month. They are supposed to bring some thing they have made to each meeting. G*43ottoms. — ■ A Surprise Birlhday Parly Last Tuesday evening about 7:30 o’clock Mrs. Hursey Beds- peth, of Conway, saw quite a crowd of her neighbors and j friends coming in, but was not jlong in learning why so many were coming at once and with so much fun and laughter for she heard them calling, .‘‘Happy birthday,” ‘‘congratulations,” ‘‘May you have many more days like this,” etc When Mrs. Heds- peth had time to look out in the yard she saw a table already setting there decorated with a large birthday cake covered with fifty three tiny candles surround ed with beautiful flowers and places laid foi; four. Out' in the yard during the evening the men and women played many games that they used to play when they were children. The ‘‘old time” spelling bee provoked so much fun that it will not be forgotten soon. When time came to go home everyone expressed the wish that Mrs. Hedspeth would have many more such birthdays and she in her usual gentle manner expressed her appreciation in a few well chosen woirds and all went home feeling that it was most pleasant to have been there. The gifts received and the party in general express only faintly the love and appreciation of her neighbors and friends. Ice cream and cake were served. The following were present; Mesdames B. M. Hogs: I expect to ship a car of hogs from Rich Square about Tuesday of next week. They are now selling for about Hie at Richmond. A hog sold is safe frofn cholera. ROXOBEL MAN IS KILLED IN AUTOMDBILE ACCIDENT Mr. Arthur Cooke, a native of Roxobel, where his people live, was instantly killed in an auto mobile accident between Norfolk and Virginia Beach early Sunday morning, August 28, when his car crashed into a tree beside the road. One who passed him just before the accident occurred said that Mr. Cooke was going at a moderate speed. He was alone and it is thought he fell asleep while driving. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lena Cathrine Cooke; four small children, his father, J. P. Cooke; two broth ers, W. J. and Kenneth Cooke; a sister, Mrs. Archer Elliott, of Rich Square, and two half broth ers, George and Judd Cooke, of Roxobel. Miss Beatrice Joyner goes back to Pilot to teach this winter. Mrs. Furvls Entertains One of the prettiest and most delightful occasions of the sea son was given by Mrs. H. J. Purvis, Woodland, to a number of her friends at a bridge and rook luncheon in her beautiful new bungalow Wednesday morn ing at 10:30 o'clock. Summer flowers were attractively arrang ed throughout the rooms. There were six tables and Mrs. Jf. P. Brown made highest score in bridge. Mrs. Elma Railey made highest in rook. Mrs. Purvis served two elaborate courses as sisted by Mrs. R. W. Blanchard, Mrs. Gzella Burgess and Miss Julia Love Griffin. Those playing included: Mrs, L C. Copeland, Mrs. W. E. Whisnant, Mrs. W.
