Entered at the Post Office in Bayboro as Second-Claes matter Don't Hit Us So Hard. The Raleigh Morning Post in its edi torial column has this to-gay. Southport is the practical and logical point for a coaling station. It can be developed cheaper than anywhere else and will be better when it is done. Rol eigh Post, Now we can't accept eaeh and very word eontained in above twenty seven words from the Post. We file our pro test to several of the most important words in this Twenty-seven, and will ask Brother Philips to please gut an al ias containing the Map ef the State of North Carolina and about one hundred miles, from Sonth Port about North, N. E. he will see Beaufort. Thn Bro. af ter finding it, study its surroundings and you will no doubt correct your editori al somewhat. Our people in these parts ought to be looking after this matter and that Beau, fort is not lost in this shuffle. Against Street Fairs. - The New Bern Journal of the 16th inst has a timely and well suggested ed itorial against Carnivals and Streets Fairs. The Journal is correct in every word it says against this, particular kind of amusements and a good deal more could be said, Even country peo ple coming into the city, in vehicles, with women and children, horses not used to the scenes are liable to get fright ened and entangled and loss of life liable to ensue. We on one occasion witnessed what came near provinga fatal accident of this kind. We like amusements cf all kinds cl iefest among the many thou sand the Circus. But do not block up your public thorough-fares with any of them, there is not a street in New Bern any too wide or even wide enough for the public good, they certainly need no blockading with Carnival structures or obstructions of any other kind. State of Maine Telephone . Law. It seems from the following which we clip from the News and Observer that even way up in the State of Maine, that the Telephones have their troubles, as well a creating troubles, The ' Raleigh News and Observer contains the follow ing : ' v , : "Maine has a law to prevent any per son from being wantonly harassed, ir- '"- lJ ----HrffrrDr ritated or vexed' by means of the tele phone." This means that there will be only one telephone in a towL, owned or regulated by the aldermen. It looks like the Hello girls up in that State mast have been doing some of the Maine Statesmen up, to get them to pace such a law as the above. The words wantonly harrasged, irritated or vexed. carries a lot of feomething with theui, and as North Carolina has bee'u follow. iug in the footstep of Maiu in so ait other legislation, it may not prove a surprise to many wnen the legislature of North Carolina presumes to pass such a law in this State. All people have rights you know. " The Garden of Eden, It is reported that one of Harvey' N. D.'s fastidious, newly-married Jadies kneads bread with her gloves on. Tijis iucieent may be somewhat peculiar, but there are others. The editor of ' this pa per needs bread with his shoes on. H heeds bread with hi dhirt on. He needs needs bread with his pants on, and un less some of the delinquent subscribers of this ''Old Rag of Freedom" pay up before lODg, he will need bread without a damn thins on end North Dakota is no Garden of Eden in the winter time. From a leading North Dakota Newdpa per. We hope all oar delinquent subscribers will read this and just immagine what a pretty figure we would be cutting if we were out on parade dressed as our Bro. in bis closing remarks has depicted. We are mighty close on to that stage ; and do hope those who do owe ns a lit tl bit, let it be ever so little come up aud pav up. We can't live on air alone nor dress entirely with sunshine. The Frost. We see from our exchanges that the frosts on last Sunday and Monday night destroyed tbe Georgia Peach and Mellon and Truck crops, and also the name lo Sooth Carolina. The Straw berry, Bean, and Potato crops In tail State has been badly damaged. Snow fell In Raleigh, and Greensboro, it was one inch dtsp, and at Asheville it was four inches dsep. A heavy freeze at Norfolk, and the truck in that locali ty was badly damaged. Now who knows Dut what after all there will be morw money for what we do make. Short crops sometimes brings in the most money don't get discouraged it might have been worse. -FOR Cabbage ' Crates FLOORING, CELING, ' SIDING, WEATHERBOARDS, DRESSED LUMBER, and BUILDING MATERIAL At Gheapssf Prices, CALL ON THE DEFIANCE BOX GO,, Oriental, N.
