The emancipation celebration here
last Saturday drew quite a large
crowd of colored frlks to town and
they enjoyed the day immensely.
Headed by the Beaufort band a very
creditable parade marched through
the principal streets and wound up
at the court house where the speak

The band and a choir dispensed a
number of appropriate selections and
there were speeches by Rev. J. S.
Bell, Rev. A. H. Pace, Rev. H. W.
Turner, and Captain Frank Ellison.
All the money needed to pay expen

left on hand which will be used for
improving the colored cemetery. A
committee has been apointed to to

uon, the John L. Roper Lumber Co.
which for more than a half
has operated a chain of sawmills in
Virginia and eastern North Carolina,
has decided to conblude entirely the
operation of its mill here.
This decision marks the cnnrln. -
sion of a gradual decline in produc
tion or lumber and shingles which has
marked the operation of the Roner
company's mills for the past decade.
This reduction has meant in the per
iod a greater attention to the devel

ings of agricultural lands. With ces
sation of the operation of the mills
concentration can be effected. ' ;
Hundreds of men who have been,
with the Roper Company for long
terms of service will go out of em

says an official, is greatly regretted
by the management.
