THE BEAUFORT NEWS THURSDAY SEPT. 2, 1926 PAGE THREE ITEMS OF" INTEREST FROM HARKER'S ISLAND Mr. Maurice J. Oneil, his wife and rem John, have returned to their home in Henderson, N. C. so that John may attend school there. They plan to make several visits here during the fall and winted and be back for sev eral months during the summer. They were delighted with their stay at Harkers Island this year and they are such fine folk they have come to seem as one of us. All who have met them and most of us have, have be come their fast friends. They are the sort of people we welcome. Mr. Brady Willis is taking care of their house while they are away. Captain John Nelson of the Fish eries Commission boat the Atlantic came over with a party of noted gen tlemen a few days ago. In the party were Senator Simmons and two rail road men, one of the Norfolk the other of New York. The came os tensibly to see Harkers Island and the shells at Shell Point, but we are hoping they had more reasons than that The "boys" at tthe Cape Lookout Coast Guard Station have installed a $250.00 radio receiving set. There will be many nights of real entertain, ment receive dfrom it, no doubt, by those who have to watch over the lives of so many on the ocean. Some more improvements are be ing made at the Coast Guard Station at Cape Lookout in the form of a basement under the main building. The original cost of the building was $9000.00 the cost of the basement is to be 9000.00. So it must be fit ted out very wel. It is to provide for steam heat, electricity and hot water plants. The residence being ' built by Richard Lewis is rapidly being erect ed and will soon be nearing comple tion. It will cost approximately $3000.00. The Teacherage is to be well fur nished it seems. Mr. Mr. Cleveland Davis has been freighting furniture for several days now. Mrs. Essie Gaskill is in Florida where she will stay with her husband Mr. Guy Gaskill. ' Messrs. Guy Gaskill, Carl Gaskill, Plymouth Guthrie, Otis Russell, Ion Lewis, Ivey Gaskill, John L. Willis and C. Lewis are in Florida in the fishing industry. ' The dredge "Neverest" of the Coast Construction Co., is leaving Beaufort this week for Wrightsville carrying several of Hafkers Island Citizens on Board. Captain Richard Lewis, R. W. Saunders, Carl Guthrie, Iredell Rose and Wallace Guthrie. Mr. and Mrs. Joe J. Whitley are how living at Ocean View,, Va., where Mr. Whitley is 'at idrk.- Mrs. Whit ley was formerly Miss Pearl Willis of Harkers Island. r There has been some work done here toward establishing a free de livery of mail. No results favorable toward this as yet has been forth ' coming. L The boss of the road work here has discharged ail except 4 rr.en. Those four have it pretty lonely. Suth things as that caue the people of Haikers Island to look blue and wonder what will happen in the No vember election. There is plenty of road material going by Harkers Point but none of it seems to stop here. Colored Folks ixews Department NORTHERN VISITORS ENTER TAINED. Mr. and Mrs. H. D. Fulford, Sallic and X.ydia Williams who have been visiting Mr. and Mrs. Timothy Nel son for the past two weeks have re. turned to Washington, D. C. They left declaring that they en joyed themselves fine while here. There were many suppers, dinners and parties given in their honor. The suppers were served at the following residences: Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Oden, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Jordan, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Pickett, Mr. and Mrs. David DaviB and Rev and Mrs. H. W. Turner. Week before last, they motored to New Bern where they .were met by a large number of friends who in turn made it pleasant for them while there. PARTY GIVEN. PARTY GIVEN. Cn Wednesday evening August 25 .Mrs. Sam Pickett entertained at her home on Cedar Street in honor of Mrs. Anna Fulford, Mrs. Sallie Wil liams and Miss Lydia Williams of Washington, D. C. The home was beautifully arranged. Delightful mus ic was rendered by Miss Helen Davis, Um Edith Parker and Miss Lina D. Chadwick, after which a delicious ice course was served. Those enjoy ing Mrs. Pickett's hospitality were: Mr. Sara A Ganzy of Washington, N. C, Mrs. H. W. Turner, Mrs. Tim othy Nelson, Miss Mollie Jerkins. All leaving reported they had had a most enjoyable evening. Some of the" best poultry farmers in North Carolina will cull their flocks in early September and sell the non-layers at the poultry car.
