(dried and ground shrimp waste)
compares favorably with fish meal as ;
a supplementary feed for swine.
ihe use ot nsn meal as a compo-j
nent for swine feed was developed
to a limited extent in Germany ear-1
ly in the present century. When the
breeders of swine became pressed by ;
the shortage of protein feed during
the World War, the use of fish meal
became general and has proven so j
profitable that some 70,000 tons an-'
nually are now utilized in that coun-;
try for swine feeding alone. j
While a large part of the fish meal j
produced in the South Atlantic states '
is sent to relatively distant points.
some being exported to Europe, it is '
known that many carloads of protein j
feeds are shipped from distant points
of production for feeding to swine,
in some cases only a few miles from I
the fish meal plants. It is not hard j
to visualize the avoidable excess cost
which is assumed by many southern i
producers of swine, possibly due to j
lack of information regarding the av-1
ailability of a protein supplement ;
from local sources.
