Get Farm Income From Fish Poles (F; H. JETER) ' Raleigh, June 2 An income of $60,000 during the past 18 months I from selling nshing poles and timber for harbor piling is the record re ported for farmers of the Landis Community in Rowan County. "This is no joke," says R. W. Graeber, extension forester at State College." More than 2000 poles have been cut and sold from the second A v - 1. : ..1 -J - -1. i , t j- n j j a the Lnt n " S part 18 months Of course the poles are not adapted for hand fish- 100 feet long and are used by ocean 1 fishermen for the purpose of fasten ing their nets after the poles have been sun into the mud bottom. The white oak poles are used for harbor piling since they have more spring to them than the ordinary pine poles." Mr. Graeber reports that 'the con tractor buying the poles is paying the farmer a price of from $2 to $2.50 for the hickory poles and ?2.50 to $4 for the white oak poles. This is an average of about $3 a pole on the stump in the woods. The length of a pole determines its price. The hickory poles used by ocean fisher men must be from 50 to 100 feet long becanse the man with short poles can't fish in deep water. In the same way, it takes long piling for construction work in deep harbors. White oak seems well adapted for this purpose. It does not snap when bumped by boats. The poles and piling timber must be long and slen der, usually running from 14 to 20 inches in diameter at the bottom and 5 to 8 inches in diameter at the top. The farmer who has such long slender poles of the kinds wanted is making a mistake to cut them into cross ties and other cheap timber products when a better market is offered for other purposes, says Mr. Graeber.
