FIGHTING THE SCHOOL BOSSES By Jimmie Guthrie Last evening more than a hundred of we Islanders met at the home of aunt Armicia Brooks with many nice presents and sympathetic greetings. All of the old and young alike went to her party to show their respects to her, and because they well knew that just 81 years had done passed by since she was an hour old. This old lady is loved by everybody and yet she is living something unusual I'll admit, yet its true. At this point however, may I be allowed to ask the question as to what source can we trace the existence and develop ment of our stupendous, our growth and and power? First we may realize how bounteous nature and nature's God has been to us. 81 years ago, way down in the dark ages. We can say in truth that innumer able, indeed arethe blessings bestow ed upon our efforts. Without the guidance of some Supreme Being, aunt Arim.-oia Brooks would never had her eighty first birthday party, for all the vast edifice of might and power that she may boast of would crumble to naught.. I believe that every right minded citizen will agree with me that we owe a generous rec ognition to the Supreme Being. We owe to Him the great fundamental duties of Religion, worship, gratitude and prayer for slipping through the rough and rugged space of 81 years. But she can read and write, yes for 75 years she began placing her lit tle savings in the Bank of Education. She las received every dividend. Her stock holdings have increased every year. No business depression has cut her short 'cause her earnings were instilled into herself. And some continue to preach short term school. It doesn't matter 'bout unselfish devotion in order that our boys and little proud girls may be able to burgeon out all there is with in them and make themselves true and upright women and men. If I were all of them county commission ers Mr. C. S. Wallace andthe Webbs and that board of Education, and al lowed the school children to miss their grade, I'd be ashamed of it till the day after I died to do this they throw away their manhood then they become as tinkling symbols and rot ten wood. God knows my soul if I was compelled by the United States Government to build a statue to those who perform glorious deeds and whose pedestial would reach high heaven, as one man said, I would not place on this statue a noted warrior because along his pathway lies the ruins of once happy homes and brok en bodies of men, nor statesmen who are accompanied by diplomacy which oftimes is lying reduced to a fine art. Neither would I place the likeness of a financier as a statue because often he rises to eminence over the broken remains of those who hold him as their life long friend. But to Almighty God and all of the people I would place a statue of the humble and un tiring school teacher whose every thought and heart palpitation is for service and devotion to a noble cause and in the hands of t! i- teacher Stat ue raised to hiy heaven I would place a lighted Ivj.j. us a symbol of their great work to give light and liberty to the human race for ever and all the ti:-v.t. I notice the ground hog came and went as usual, though this time he did not see his shadow, such a bad day he couldn't hardly see his hole. But he is a prophet same as any oth er congressman or senator. So we will have good weather till our road gets good and finished. It is quite certain that Capt. Char lie Thomas will have used every shell available on is completed he is familiar with his work. Capt. Thomas is a road man, he has been on the road (not sentenced) about eleven years. He knows the crooks and turns, the ins and outs of all road blue prints. No engineer can tell Capt. Thomas a new thing about roads. He knows their job and his too He was up against a proposition when he landed his force on Harkers Is land but if the ground hog continu es to loll about in the sun he will have us in good working condition MOREHEAD OTY ITEMS FOR SALE DOUBLE CAMELIA I J. The prosram which money or no money if we do not , was published in the News last week, have our full trm of eight months school, then we will endeavor to try a brand new set of county com missioners. Nothing from God's blue heaven down to this black rock is nearer to rse than my children, and the humanity who causes them to Miss their G'rade this season, will be minus their grade in June should I live. Not a man in this flowery coun ty while visiting the school but what would duck his old hat' in reverence to those tired and worn teachers who toil there day in and day out (as in our case) having jurisdiction over more than two hundred as mean lit tle tots as can walk. Yet they (the teachers) are the porest paid of all classes of humanity who work for the enlightenment and uplifting of humanity yet, day after day they toil on. Theirs is a labor of love and went forward smoothly and with great credit to all who took part. Immediately after the concert up on request of Reverend J. P. Harris a meeting of a considerable number of patrons and friehds of the school was held to consider the question of whether the school should continue for eight months or stop at the end of six months. Mr. Harris stated that it was probable that the non-resident teachers would be willing to teach the two extra months without pay provid White Oak Wednesday, Feb. 24th School.
