In the fourth zone the rate is $2.00 a year. Entered as second-class matter February 6, 1912 at the eostoffice in Beaufort, North Carolina, under the Act of March 3, 1879. MEMBER NORTH CAROLINA PRES3 ASSOCIATION THURSDAY, DECEMBER 13, 1934 Mr. McNinch delivered an address last week at the Universtiy of N. C, on the sub ject of "Power Plans and Problems." Won der how they would like to hear him discuss that subject at Duke? The News regrets that Mr. E. B. Jeffress has not yet been able to resume his duties as Chair man of the Highway Commission. It is nec essary to have a head for this very important department of the State government. Gov ernor Ehringhaus has appointed Mr. Capus Waynick, editor of the High Point Enterprise, assistant chairman. So far as we know Mr. Waynick has had no experience in road mat ters but he is a conscientious worker and a man of considerable ability. No doubt he will fill the position satisfactorily. Four men recently escaped from the crim inal insane department of the State Hospital at Raleigh. Three of them had escaped be fore but were recaptured. Two of these men had committed murder but escaped the chair on the ground of insanity. Judge Sinclair who tried one of the men said he had plenty of sense and ought to be electrocuted. At any rate these men have sense enough to es cape unless they are closely watched. The western "progressive" Senators who want the Republican party reorganized near er to their hearts' desire evidently mean they want to take charge of it. For the past quar ter of a century or more these men, or their predecessors, have fought the Republican or ganization. They represent a rather small part of the popular vote of the party and if they were to take charge of it would be a case of the tail trying to wag the dog. THE RAILROAD NEEDS BEAUFORT'S BUSINESS So far as we have heard there has been no threat made by any responsible person to do away with Beaufort's end of the railroad. However it can be seen very readily that if the Norfolk Southern should have to give up the Atlantic and N. C. road that it will have no need for the piece of road between Beau fort and Morehead City. If the Norfolk Southern succeeds in releasing the A. and N C. road it does not seem likely that it would hurt its own business by chopping off one of its shipping points. And if some other cor poration, or the State itself, should operate the A. and N. C. railroad it would probably continue the Beaufort link. Fortunately Beaufort has both water and rail transportation and of course the trucks handle a great deal of freight. It would be inconvenient to handle all the incoming and outgoing freight here without railroad assist ance but it might be possible to handle most of it. If Beaufort should be deprived of rail road facilities there certainly would be a big increase in water and truck shipments to and from here. It matters not who may operate the A. and N. C. in the future the lessee had better hold on to the Beaufort business. More freight is shipped by rail in and out of Beau fort than from any point between here and New Bern. It would be very poor business judgment to let that freight go to competitors. THE BEAUFORT NEWS THURSDAY. Boston Transcript A funny thing about these people who risk their lives going up into the stratosphere, or down for half a mile or so into the depths of the dcean, not that it means anything in particular, but most ofthem are married men.
