Murder Mystery Thickens
BOSTON, Oct. 11 Investigators
revealed tonight that a former ad
mirer of Mrs. Grayee Asquith has
confessed he committed a serious
statutory offense against the bleach
ed blonde Weymouth widow sveral
weeks before she was hacked to
death in her Lakeshore cottage, but
denied any knowledge of the slaying.
The offense the man reportedly
admitted is punishable by long-term
imprisonment. Authorities withheld
the man's name. He was held for
questioning but no charge has been
lodged against him, it was disclosed.
The alleged confession was said to
bave been made within the past two
North Carolina Leads
In Vegetable Growing
Raleigh Oct. 15 North Carolina
leads all other states in the value of
garden vegetables grown for home
use.
That is the conclusion reached by
M. E. Gardner, extension horticultur
ist at State College, after studying
figures recently released by the bur
eau of the census, U. S. Department
of agriculture.
The figures did not cover Irish and
sweet potatoes, but they included the
other principal vegetables grown
American gardens. Mississippi
stood next to North Carolina, and
Tennessee ranked third.
The value of North Carolina's crop
of vegetables grown for home use
was placed at $9,631,010. The
Mississippi and Tennessee valuations
were between eight and nine million
dollars.
In 1935, North Carolina farmers
also raised 95,684 aires of garden
vegetables for sale, not counting
Irish and sweet potatoes, Gardner
observed.
This acreage was divided thus:
Beans, 22,009 acres; cabbage, 8,51a
acres; sweet corn, 9,619 acres; Toma
toes, 5,420 acres; watermelons,
20,240 acres, and otler vegetables
except potatoes 29,878 acres.
Gardner pointed out that the in
creased production and consumption
of garden vegetables over the nation
indicates a change in the dietarv
habits of the American people.
This is particularly true in North
Carolina, he went on, where the peo
ple are paying more attention to a
balanced diet and where farmers are
seeking to live at home by producing
on the farm as much of their food re
quirements as possible.
The greater consumption of gar
den vegetables is not only conducve
to better health, he added, but it is
also providing many families with
another welcome source of cash in
come. Cotton in Union County is late but
is well fruited and prospects are
good for a normal harvest this fall.

Dig Sweet Potatoes
Before First Frost
Raleigh Oct. 16 Don't leave sweet
potatoes in the ground until frost
nips them, warns L. P. Watson, ex
tension horticulturist at State Col
lege. They are sentive to colJ and wiil
be damaged by frosty weather, he
stated. Cold-damaged potatoes will
not keep as those which are protect
ed. If an unexpected frost should kill
the vines, he added, cut them off and
dig the potatoes at once.
Watson also urged growers to be
careful not to bruise or cut the pota -
toes in digging, hauling, or storing.
Blemishes decrease their market
value and increase their susceptibilitj
to disease.
A large two-horse turn plow with
a rolling coulter attached to the beam
and adjusted so as not to cut the
potatoes is a good implement for dig
ging. Or a "middle buster" may be
used if the rows are barred off.
Don't throw potatoes from one row
to another. Three iows may be
piled together, since potatoes from
the two outside rows may be laid
over in the middle without throw
ing. When picking up the tubers, place
the different grades in separate piles.
This saves trouble later. Leave the
culls in the field.
Allow the potatoes to remain in
the field long enough for the sur-
face to dry so that the roots will be
freed from clinging soil. This also
avoids carrying excess moisture into
the storage house.

1 Do not fill hampers or crates too
full. Overfilled containers may
cause the potatoes to be mashed or
bruised in transporaion or storage.
Always clean out storage houses
and containers before putting in
potatoes. It is also good to let the
storage room and baskets air for a
few days after they arc cleaned.
