. You Can Help Make
'Festival Successful
Every individual in Beau
fort can help make the first
annual Gladiolus Festival,
echeduled to start next Fri
day (June 23) and continue
through Sunday a success.
Perhaps you cannot give fi
nancially, and vou who can
not aid by contributing funds
which will be used in adver
tising, prizes and expenses
fenerally will certainly not
e hampered by collectors
But many of you who read
this edtiorial can give gen
erously. A goal was set for
the financial set-up. To date
approximately one-third of
the goal, or over $300 has
teen raised. An additional
$300 is in sight and will
probably be added to the
fund within the next three
days. Some oi you will be
saying that such an amount
should be enough to put on
any kind of festival or show
having a primary purpose
the idea of publicizing a
town which has not in years
gone by gotten the right
kind of publicity breaks. You
who think that, have never
been closely associated with
the problem of securing
bands, bugle and drum corps
dozens of trophy cups and
most of all paid advertising
in newspapers of the State
an dnation. It is an expen
sive proposition. So citizens
who love Beaufort and want
to help tell the world about
the ancient town which is
making such progressive
steps forward in recent years
may help if they wish, by
making contributions to the
fund which will put the event
across. Your newspaper,
your banker, or any member
of your active Chamber of
Commerce will accept any
contribution you care to
make and see that it is added
to the fast growing fund.

BASEBALL
By A. R. Rice
Last Sunday Beaufort defeated
Moiehead City here 4 to 3 by put
ting on a last of the ninth inning
rally for 3 runs. Trailing by 3 to
1 and apparently on the losing
side of the ledger Potter walked
and R. Longest got his second hit
of the day. Both scored as the re
sult of three consecutive errors by
Guthrie, catcher and R. Wade,
third baseman and the score was
deadlocked at 3-all. At this point
H. Finer left the box for More-
head and was replaced by N. ade
Chadwick was bit by a pitched ball
and while attempting to steal went
all the way to third as Guthrie
pegged into centerneld. Mades
single to right and the ball game
was over. Two were oui at tne
time.
Beaufort got five hits off Finer
and 1 off Wade. West Taylor on
the mound for the locals fanned
16, including every player at least
once and allowed 5 hits, one of
which was a homer by Bell, the
only run they earned. Beaufort
parned two of their four. Longest
of the winners and Sanders of the
losers each collected two safeties.
Loneest also walked twice. Ed
Potter caught for the locals and
Guthrie for the visitors.
This is the third game for Beau
fort this summer. They defeated
Harkers Island here 5 to 2. C.
Rice pitched for Beaufort and
Moore for Harkers Island. Com
fort won from the locals at Com
fort 3 to 2. Taylor and R. Long
est did the losing chunking and
Cardwell the winning.
Next Sunday, the 18th, Comfort
plays here.
program (almost 3 hourse), the
last night show will begin about
8:15: so go early and get a good
seat.
On Monday and Tuesday, Fay
Bainter (Academy Award in
ner) is featured in "The Lady and
The Mob;" which is a comedy dra
ma of a society matron who takes
it upon herself to "Clean-up" the
city. This is not an ordinary
"Gangster" picture, but was made
for the purpose of entertaining
theatre patrons, and at the same
time it "pokes fun" at modern
gangland. This is the only time
this picture will be presented m
Carteret County.
On Wednesday and Thursday,
you will indeed get more ttian
your money's worth. On these two
days you will see "Let Freedom
Ring" starring Nelson Eddy, Vir
ginia Bruce and Victor Mac Lag
len. This is a picture that is strict
ly American; and comes in the
class of such epic films as "Dodge
City and Uunion Pacific," with the
addition of the unequaled singing
of Nelson Eddy. You will tingle
from head to toe as he singe
"America."
In addition to this "Super" fea
ture and 40 minutes of shorts: If
you go to the Sea Breeze on Wed
nesday night you will have a
chance of winning a cash prize; or
you go on Thursday night you
mav select (free any one piece of
the Dinnerware they have been
giving away for the past eight
months.
With this arrangement you can
decide for yourself; whether you
want to "take a chance" of win
ning a cash prize, or prefer to be
guaranteed of receiving a small
gift; and attend on the night of
your choice.
If you are interested only in
the picture, you can save money
by attending the matinee, at which
time the admissions are reduced;

Preview Tuesday
George Eastman of Eastman
Furniture Company, local distri
butors for Kelvinator Refrigera
tors and Philco Radios, attended
the District Sales and Dealers
meeting and preview presented in
the Casino on Atlantic Beach Tues
day. Mr. Kennally, Philco Sales
Manager attended and was the
principal speaker.
He introduced the new models
of 1940, which features outfits
need only to be plugged in light
socket to operate. Philco Engi
neers have created a 1940 product
which eliminates the use of ground
wires and aerial'. A compact port
able, so small that it can be car
ried in an overcoat pocket was al
so shown. The portable operates
without aerial and can be tuned in
anywhere under any conditions.
GRAND JURY
REPORT
To Hit Honor, Judge Clawson L.
William, Presiding at the June
Term of Carteret County Su
perior Court.
We, your Grand Jurors, beg
leave to submit the following re
ports :
We examined all bills and com
plaints that came before us.
We passed on 16 bills, of which
13 were true bills and 3 were not
true bills.
We inspected all County offices
and found them in good condition
and the records well-kept. The
new index system installed in the
Register of Deeds' Office and the
Clerk of Superior Court's office,
under the supervision of Mrr.
Charles W. Stevens, is in our op
inion among the best in the state.
We visited the County Home
and found same sanitary and in
good condition. We talked to sever
al of the inmates who said that
they were well-treated by the keep
er, Mr. George W. Lewis. We al
so inspected the County Jail and
found same clean and in sanitary
condition. The prisoners spoke in
the highest praise of Mr. Chaplain,
Deputy Sheriff and Jail Keeper.
We, your Grand Jurors, have
nothing but the highest praise for
Mr. Johnson, Caretaker and Cus
todian of the Court House Grounds
We admired the flowers which are
well-kept.
We carefully inspected the rec
ords of Guardians and Guardians
Bonds and funds. With a few ex
ceptions, the accounts appear to
be correct and funds invested in
United States Bonds and other
negotiable paper. We suggest and
recommend that Mr. L. W. Hassell,
Clerk of the Superior Court, noti
fy all Bonding Companies or their
agents that have furnished bond
for Guardians and have ' these
guardians file their annual .nd fi
nal accounts as required by law.
As there are around ?3C0,000
worth of tax-sale certificates in
filing cases in the Tax Collector's
Offices, and if there should be fire
the County would sustain a great
loss. We therefore recommend
that a fire-proof vault be built in
the Tax Collector's office and
County Auditor's offices, so as to
connect and open in both offices,
to end that these tax certificates
may be protected from loss or
fire
We wish to commend His Hon
or, Judge Clawson L. Williams, for
his fair and impartial charge to
the Grand Jury and for the many
courtesies extended to them.
Respectfully submitted,
D. W. MORTON,
Foreman.
