Mrs. Sina Cannon went home with her sister Mrs. Jim Lane Sun day to spend a week at Reelsboro with her and other relatives. Mrs. Bennie Hardy and children spent last Thursday with her moth er Mrs. George Tosto. Miss Reta Moore, R. N., of Gal linger Hospital, Washington, D. C, arrived Saturday to attend the closing exercises of Smyrna school. Her brother and sister are gradu ates. Mr. John Moore and friend of Swanquarter, have been visiting his mother, Mrs. Lena Moore. Mr. Leon B. Lewis and son Grant, who have been spending some time at home, have returned to their work at Norfolk. Mrs. Viola Murphy visited her daughter Mrs. Gordon Becton at Morehead City this week. The community is glad to have Capt. Dave Moore and family back home again. Gerald Davis and Vernon Lewis will soon have their new homes ready to move into. Mr. Paul Lewis, of Coast Guard, left Sunday for Philadelphia where he is on patrol work. He was called home on account of sickness. Mrs. Carrie Moore is much im proved at this writing. She has been ill for some time. Leon Lewis, Jr., stationed on C. G. Modoc, spent the week-end at home. Mr. Garland Lewis visited in Morehead City Saturday. Neal Jones has returned to his work after several days sickness. Mr. W. W. Scott of West Beau fort visited at the home of his brother-in-law, Mr. Luther Murphy. Paul Lewis, Jr., is now home from Wilmington Hospital where he underwent an operation. The 1833 General Assembly re legalized the sale of beer in legis lation sponsored by Senator W. Roy Francis of Haywood county. The measure was ratified April 5, amended April 23, and legated beer sales began on May 1, 1933. The measure was revised and in corpoiated in the permanent Rev enue Act by the 11)37 legislature. Only $183,102.37 was collected in beer taxes by the state for the calendar year of 11)33, the first year been was permitted to be sold under the 1933 act. For the calendar year of 1940, the state collected $1,321,024.37; the coun ties $121,125; and, the cities and towns $25,000 a total of $1,-437,149.37.
