Question: How may rust of gal
vanized roofing be controlled?
Answer: At the first sign of
rust, says D. S. Weaver, Extension
agricultural engineer of State Col
lege, or when the roof shows dark
discoloration, the galvanized roof
ing should be painted with metal
lic zinc paint. Before applying
the paint, the roof should be put
in good physical shape and a.! gut
ters and low places should be
cleaned of fallen leaves and dirt
If the roof has been painted with
any kind of paint previously, all
loose und scaly parts must be re
moved with a wire brush, rinsing
the roof with water, and allowing
it to dry.
Question: How should meat be
cooked for canning?
Answer: Mrs. Cornelia C. Mol
lis. Extension food conservation
ist of State College, says there are
several ways to pre-cook meat for
canning. "If meat is to be cooked

before it is canned," she said, "it
should not be more than half done.
It can be browned ouicklv in a
small amount of hot fat in a fry
ing pan; it can be roasted in the
oven ; or it can be stewed or boiled.
Do not add salt to the meat until
after it is packed in the jars."
Mrs. Morris also emphasized that
a nressure cooker is essential in
canning meats. Other methods are
not safe, she declared
Reans are high in food value
and low in cost. There are red kid
rev beans, pea beans, white nar
row beans, yellow-eye beans, white
kidney beans, black turtle soup
beans, and all the rest.
Eat beans for energy, ea '.hem
for economv. eat them for patriot
tism; but eat thern often. North
Carolina grows them, almost every
kind for almost every purpose.
Appeal! Beans appeal in cost,
in convenience of storage, in their
variety, and in their keeping qual
ity. They are good in soups, in
salads, and in sandwiches.
Nutrients are plentiful in beans
They contain protein for body
building, carbohydrate lor energy,
and many of the vitamins and min
erals for general good health and
growth.
Serve beans hot; serve beans
cold; serve them as a main dish
for dinner, or as a pick-up supper
Serve them simply, or attractively
garnished and seasoned.
A MOTHER'S FAITH
Beans are as American as is ap
ple pie and today it is doubly im
portant to use them because they
are low in cost and high in food
value. (Wrhen combined or served
with milk and eggs they may take
the place of more costly meats).
Why am I proud and fu!.: of
smiles?
My boy is on the Solomon Isles... .
But somehow I know he'll come
back to me
And we'll laugh at the fears that
used to be.
When he was little I could walk
and guide
So Savior I pray that thou be at
his side
As thou walked the lanes of Gali
lee, Dear Savior walk with him for me.
Be thou my hand that would keep
Viis in mine
And all things else that Mothers
must resien
Maybe he's one of the stars so
bright in Uotf's own service
flag at nfeht,
That Boy of Mine.
Maybe I smile to hide the aches,
Nobody knows when my heart
breaks.
So loving Savior, I pray to Thee
To send him safely home to me,
That Boy of Mine.

Question: What substitute for
steamed bonemeal may be used in
the hog ration?
Answer: Thoroughly stemmed
bone meal is not always available
for use in making mineral mix
tures for hogs, says Ellis V. Ve
tal, animal husbandry Extension
specialist of N. C. State College.
When it is not available, he cays,
a mixture of 10 pounds of ground
limestone and two pounds or salt
may be used. If it is available,
use 10 pounds of ground lime
stone, 10 pounds of steamed bone
meal, and five pounds of salt. Min
erals should be placed where the
hogs can have free access to it,
but should be kept dry.
Eggs are a protective food.
Serve them to your family because
of their protein, fat, mineral, and
vitamin content; they are bomb
shells of protective food against
vitamin-short meals. They should
be included m diets at all t'mes,
but especially when extra strains
necessitate more than ordinary
health and vigor.
There is a place for at least a
small flock on every North Caro
lina farm.
About the size of an English
Sparrow or a little larger, the male
Cowbird is glossy black all over,
with the exception of the head
which is brown. The female is en
tirely brown. It occurs irregularly
throughout the State during the
migrations and in winter, not be
ing known to summer anywhere
except on Roanoke Island and vi
cinity, where it was observed for
several successive years in June
and July by the late Rev. 1 rancis
Craighil! of Rocky Mount.
It usually goes in flocks of
varying sizes often containinc no
more than a dozen or so birds.
however, during the early eigHies,
flocks that appeared to contain
thousands of birds occurred near
Raleigh in fields of newly planted
grain, but such have never been
noted since.
This bird, like the European
Cuckoo, has the habit of laying its
eggs in the nests of birds smaller
than itself, usually onlv ono eee
being placed in any one nest. It
usually only lays where it passes
the summer. T. D. Burleigh, how
ever, found eggs or young three
times in the nests of Redeyed Vir
cos near Asheville in the spring,
but no adults stayed to uiamer,
and a similar case has been report
ed from Statesville in the nist of
a Yellow-throated Virco. If this
habit is at all common it would
provide such localities wth a
sprinkling of immature birds in
the summer.
As the voung Cowbirds invar
iably dump the rightful young of
the nest overboard, this makes the
species an enemy of our smaller
birds and adding to this its occa
sional depredations of fields of
sprouting grain, there is little to
be said in its favor.

Don't Neglect Them!
Nature designed the kidneys to do a
marvelous job. Their task is to keep the
flowing blood stream tree of an excess of
toxic impurities. The act of living lift
ittelf is constantly producing waste
matter the kidneys must remove from
the blood if good heath is to endure.
When the kidneys fail to function as
Nature intended, there is retention of
waste that may cause body-wide dis
tress. One may suffer nagging backache,
persistent headache, attacks of dizziness,
getting up nights, swelling, puffiness
under the eyes feel tired, nervous, all
worn out.
Frequent, scanty or burning passages
are sometimes further evidence of kid
ney or bladder disturbance.
The recognized and proper treatment
is a diuretic medicine to help the kidneys
get rid of excess poisonous body waste.
