UNABRIDGED
SCHOOLING
Boys and Girls have ;help
ed tremendously this sum
mer and in many instances
have done the work of men
and women. Most of them
have been well paid for it. It
has given them opportuni
ties in which we aehirht, but
we hope that it isn't gome to
mean that havins had a
taste of earning and being on
their own. so to speak, they
are going to want to stay out
of school next month. We
are prepared for smaller en
rollments in me uuyw clos
es. Those who stop to en-1
ter the Service will have op-;
portunities again, but the
long range view for the oth-:
ers rules out abridged school-1
ing as unwise and unpatriotic.
MOSES
The polio list in North
Carolina has climbed this
week to 547. Its an alarming
disease both because it may
take the life of the child who
is stricken and because the
sequela of paralysis follows
the child as long as he lives.
The Bible tells about the1
Children of Israel in the wil
derness when Moses was
trying to cet them out. They
were often a headache to
him: he was doing the best
he could but thev "as it were
murmured." As it were mur
muring is more trying really
than out and out murmuring
to the rierson who is attempt
ing to do something. Dr.
Kobt. K. Oliver, our Moses
for the time being (sans long
grey beard), is trying to get
us out of this situation un
scathed. He is doing all that
medical training, combined
advice of scores of specialists
in public health, and the en
ergy and determination of
our County Health Depart
ment can to see Carteret
safely through the crisis. It
is to be hoped that citizenr,
will cooperate without ques
tioning and without as it
were murmuring.
ABCEDARIANS WANTED

The
Xollor
Not since the last war and
perhaps not then have su
perintendents and principals
had such a time finding ad
cedarians to man the schools.
In one Sunday paper (Aug
ust 13), scarcely two weeks
before the normal opening
date for school, we found
something like 75 calls in the
want ads. High school de
partments seem to bo suffer
ing most and primary de
partments least according to
this small sampling.
There are two classes of
women Who teach: those to
whom teaching is a hyphen
between college and marri
age, and those who make it a
career. In war time mar
riages are speeded up, the
hvpens are shortened and al
most disappear, so there are
not as many in the first class.
The second class have little
motivation for continuing.
They may be faithful and
true for five, ten, fifteen
years, but at the end of that
time they will be doing the
same work with approxi
mately the sam pay a kind
of cog - in - the -wheel-treadmill-existence
with little op
portunity to grow into any
thing larger for superinten
dencies and principalships
are seldom given to women
in this part of the country. It
is not surprising that with
the first opportunity for
more interesting work at
larger pay those who are vit
al and energetic should go
into other fields.
