ball bat by another negro follow
ing an altercation of_ a baseball
game at Colonial, Heights, a su
burb of Columbia, S. C., Monday
afternoon of last week.
A rigid inspection of all food
stuffs is to be taken up by Mis

ery that many cases of pellagi’a
in small interior towns were due
directly to sour corn meal im
ported from the west.
The government has establish
ed at Columbia, Missouri, a
laboratory for the testing of farm
and garden seeds for Missouri
farmers. This movement is rapid
ly putting the dishonest seed
dealers out of business.
A dispatch from Georgetown,
Ark., last week reports the kill
ing at that place of A. F. John
son, a hotel proprietor, by a
negro. The negro was after
wards run dowrf by a sheriff’s

ed arrest.
At the annual meeting at Dan"
ville, Va., last week of the Bright
Tobacco Growers* Association of
Virginia and North Carolina
favorable consideration was given
to a proposal to unite with the
Farmers’ Co-operate Educational
Union of America.
Gov. B. B. Comer, of Alabama,
was slightly injured last week in
a runaway in Abbeville, Ala., be

front seat of a carriage. He
again hurt the leg which has
been troubling him as the result
of a horses’ kick several weeks

The interstate commerce com
mission last week ordered a re
duction in through freight rates
to Winston-Salem and Durham,
N. C., from Roanoke and Lynch
burg, Va. It amounts to about
9 cents a hundred pounds on hay,
grain and packing house pro
ducts.

man, mayor of Ridgeway, Henry
county, and Ben Jones, Reginald
Jones and Henry Pearson, were
indicted by the grand jnry for
the murder of David Wade. The
man was killed at Ridgeway
several weeks ago at the Norfolk
and Western railway station.
Robert G. Nelson, a petty
officer on the United States steam
ship Yankton, will receive $500
as a reward for finding the body
of Charles H. Davenport, w4io
disappeared from a local hotel in
New York, February 14. This
reward had been offered by
Davenport’s family for his dis
covery, dead or alive.
The will of Nicholas Dale, a
former newspaper man, of Pitts
burg, Pa., who had lived for
years a hermit-like life on 65
cents a week, as he boasted, was
filed last week, directing that
$1,350, which he had saved, be
fowarded to the Holy Land to
the “Sorrowful Mother and
Blessed Virgin Church, erected
1,500 years ago in the path of
the eross.”
Lying in plain sight of stable
boys and hostlers with three
months accumulation of dirt and
rust, a tin can was picked up at
a livery stable in Washington a
few days ago, containing $20,000
worth of jewehy stolen last
March from, the home of Mrs.
Isham, Hornsby. Not a piece was
missing. A detective found it
and has arrested a negro named
Scott Wimbush, who confessed.
W. J. Johnson, of Nashville,
Tenn., one of the assistant fore
men of the American Bridge
company, now putting up the
new steel bridge over Dan and
Staunton rivers at Clarksville,
Va.,^ v/as accidently killed Wed
nesday of last week. He stepp
ed to one side of the old bridge
out of the way of a train that

iron fell from the top of the

causing instant death.
