There was no surprise in any quarter when, last month, Con gress voted to promote Arizona and New Mexico to the rank of statehood. A dozen years ago they were at the point of admis sion by virtue of an omnibus bill that would also have admitted Oklahoma and the Indian Terri tory as two States. A hard fight led by Senator Beveridge in his capacity as chairman of the Com mittee on Territories, gave us the present State of Oklahoma, with suitable population and bounda ries. Arizona and New Mexico ought to have been united and brought in as one State with a proviso that after fifty years the State might be divided into two if it liad population and wealth equal to twice the average of the rest of the States in Lae Union. In nothing else have our political parties more perniciously obstruc ted statesmanship than in the shaping and admission of new States. Under the bill as passed it will be some time before State can be adopted, and four new \ Senators can be seated at Wash ington. Meanwhile, this chapter of our history being closed, we must e ll unite in wishing Arizona and New Mexico a great and honorable future. Let us also hope that their four U. S. Sena tors may prove to be men of sound character, even though of limited public experience. — From ‘‘The Progress of the World,” in the American Review of Reviev/s Great Advertising Roanoke, Va., Ai;i,g Every section along^ t & Western, city, to’fvi nent locality, can Ipe in , pictures and ! the thousands of :: visit the Ohio Valley in Cincinnati, August tember 24.
