Dear Sir:— The deal we made at Burlington to buy out the Southern -Alamance Tele phone Company has caused so much dissatisfaction airiong the new sub scribers as well as the old v/e have decided not to buy. So you can count the deal oif., I am, Vouj's truiy (Signed) C. F. COBLE. Written for J. C. Griffin, Pres. The deal above referred to is an agreement made betw'een J. C. Grif fin, President, and C. F. Coble. Sec. & Trea.s., of the Snow Camp Mutual Telephone Co., and John R. Stuart, President, and W. C. Rowe, Sec. & Treas., of the Southern Alamance Telephone Company, in ’.vhich the Snow Camp Mutual Telephone Comp- ar^y agreed to buy from the Southed u Alamance Telephone Company, all of its property and its rights of contract for connection with the lines of the Southern Bell Telephone & Telegraph Company, for a stipulated sum. This contract was made at Burl ington on May 9, 19H, to take ef fect July 1, and was made in the pres-^ncs of T. W. V/cuStCi , sp^ial agent of the Southern Tell Yelsphone & Telegraph Company, and R. F. Du rant, manager of the Southern -Bell, at Burlnigton. At this meeting Mr. Webster offer ed the Snow Camp Mutual Telephone Company a connection with its toll .t*rat‘iuv, UJitl in cvory p;n-ajrraph of ihe ij.tervn.*v> jxivon to the Saturday Kver.injx and the nu’diator.^ have been toM, st, the di?vatfhe. infunp u.‘. thui iho Uiiit.*d States wiil insi.-t upon a nu>Jit, onvc for ali, of »li .Mexico's problems. There has been pleiily of recognition of our duty in the prem ises; therefor5, we submit that when the President declined to extend rec ognition to Herta, alor^ir with the other powers, he should have had in mind ,>iome alternative. We a^rain :'Ubmit, always with respect for the opinions of Rhers, that aimless watch ing ijfid waitinfT, or deadly drftinjc, rannot be regarded as a policy, ih the jreneral acceptatioii of the word. The \Va->ihinglon ^rovernment .'should n«»c have intervened, morally, in Mexico, unless it was \Milin;r to accept the consequences, hi Meu^ this course has inevitably meant a lonjc era of death i'.nd destruction, while the crit icism we have drawn from abroad has been severe and widespread. In Cermany this criticism has l«?e?i well nigh univer.sal, andn this will not have the effect of helpinj; up, commercial ly. Tile people there do not like what they ncgard as our assumption of superiority in morals, after Ger- n^any has rccojcnized Huerta, and they point to the fact that we have provided nothing better than Huerta. Even today one is left in consider able doubt as to what the Washing ton fioHcy is as to Mexico. There is the possibiKty that the A. B. C, mediators may find the way out for us. That should not be so very dif ficult, .^ince both Huerta and Secre tary Bryan want out. But if we are forced to take some action alte)*, what form will it take? On April 20 the President, in his message to Congress, asked for approval of his course in usin;i* the arsied force of the United States in obtaining from Huerta and his adherents “the fullest recognition of the rights and dignity of the Unit ed States.” T^his was all the Pres ident proposed. In specific terms, on this memorable occasion, in the pres- encne of the House, and Senate. Mr. Wilson declared it the purpose of the adminisiration fully to respect the rights of the people of Mexico to “aet- f- r liiK'Tlu to do .*:o.
