Thk Caucasian. THK lII.Y (Al TAIAN I'KNO. Will. M- The first issue of Tub Daii.v Cat casian appeared January C.th, just prior to the assembling of the leg:s latunt. That issue contained the following announcement: We start Thk Daii.v Caucasian at this time, to report the proceed ings of the legislature to our people, and to defend ourselves against the misrepresentations which our ene mies are sure to attempt to sow broadcast to the danger and damage of the reform movement in North Carolina. As yet, the stockholders hare not determined as to whether or not the paper shall be continued as a daily beyond the present session of the legislature. It is hoped and believed that oar people will so rally to the support of the paper as to en able it to continue its much needed work of educating the public con science along the lines of necessary reform. But if it shall be so that our expectations and wishes in this regard are disappointed, we can con fidently , assure all the people that The Daily Caucasian will be in the fight in 18JG." The chief, purpose for which the Daily issue of the paper was begun is now accomplished. It has reported lu r"t' - -- Tt.tiv us of triedto be honest and fair. If there has ever been a misrepresentation of anything or trybody, t has been purely accidental. Somo criticisms have been offered and some positions have been taken which apparently did not please some who might, for political reasons only, have been re garded as its friends. But the posi tions assumed and the criticisms of fered have been honest; and if they were afterwards discovered to be er roneous, there was never any hesita tion in admitting error. There has been no disappointment in the hope and belief that our peo ple would rally to the support of the Daily. A wide conference, by corres pondence and otherwise, has been had as to the advisability of contin uing the publication of The Daily Caucasian. This conference was with the three thousand subscribers that went on the books within three weeks after the Daily issue was be gun, and also with other friends all over the State; and there are at hand sufficient pledges for subscriptions and stock to justify a continuance of the Daily publication. But with these pledges there is a strongly ex pressed judgment that an absolute necessity tor its continuance does not exist just now but will exist in the future. Acting on that judg f The CaUCAS- IAN Publishing Company have deci ded that the Daily issue shall be suspended with the ending f the ses sion of the legislature. The Daily issue of Thursday morning, March 14, will therefore be the last one for the pres ent. It will be reissued at the prop er time. It may not be amiss to say that the Daily issue ceases with mon ey in its treasury, and with paid up stock subscriptions practically unim paired. Troper disposition will be made of the funds which have been paid for subscriptions for a longer time than the Daily has been pub lished. Tub Weekly Caucasian will be continued and published in the city of Raleigh, and will be under the immediate management of Mr. Hal. W. Ayer. FOIt UNITKI) ACTION. From the Caucasian's point of view, nothing can be said against the movement recently begun for the purpose of uniting into one organi zation, regardless of avowed politi cal faith, all the people of the coun try who honestly desire a settlement of the financial question by the adop- a A 1 of free coinage ot saver at me 1G to 1. The issue is between the gold .stan dard, gold bonds, ard bank curren cy on the one side, and the bimetal lic standard, no bonds, and govern ment currency on the other. First. On this issue we declare ourselves to be unalterably opposed to the single gold standard, and de mand the immediate return to the constitutional standard of gold and silver bv the restoration by this (Sovernment, independently of any' foreign power, of the unrestricted coinage of both silver and gold into standard money at a ratio of 1(1 to 1, and upon terms of exact equality, the silver coin to be a full legal ten der, equally with gold, for all debts and dues, public and private. Second. We hold that the power to control and regulate a paper curren cy is inseparable from the power to coin money, and hence that all cur reucy intended to circulate as money should be issued and its volume con trolled by the general government only, and should be legal tender. Third. We are unalterably op posed to the issue by the United States of interest-bearing bonds in time of peace, and demand the pay ment of all coin obligations of the ENDORSED FOII Printing AND BINDING IX Qnalilj and Price of Wort. V ikkuo we appeal from the intelligence aua pauivnom o'vi.c American people- We would like to ask what the News & Observer meant by saying that "the sixty day limit for the leg islature has expired, and yet the tax payers are still burdened to give the Reformers more time to caucus." Honest now, what did you mean? Every sensible man knows what im pression you attempt to create; but will you tell, square out, what yon tried to insinuate? Was it a few clerks' pay, or did you want to de ceive some of the remainder of your poor, blind, prejudiced and discredit ed old Democratic partyinto believing that the legislature was taking the State's money for overtime. You ought to have been on guard like this when the people were burdened to pay you some thousands annually for nothing. The Caucasian is a believer in material advancement and encour agement. It had hoped that the present legislature would show a strong tendency in that direction. That body honored the dead; why not try to infuse life into the living by encouraging industry by aiding industrial organizations, such as the Dairymen's association, Agricultural society &e. Evidently the "Farm ers' lobby' which is the entire legis lature, does not lobby for the farm er. First thing somebody knows the farmer will begin to "lobby" for himself. SENATOR GEORGE WANTS REST And Will Retire From the Senate After a Service of Eighteen Years. Greenville, Miss., March 11. It is announced hereon reliable authority that IT. S. Senator J. Z. George will not he a candidate for re-election at the expiration of his present term. Un der Mississippi's new constitution, leg islators are elected only every four years, and the only, regular session of the legislature to convene before the expiration of Senator George's term in 1S!)! will be the body composed of members elected in November next. The public announcement of the deter mination of Senator George to retire will prove a political sensation in Mis sissippi and several prominent men will at an early date enter the contest for his seat. It is already understood that Congressman II. D. Money, John M. Allen and ex-Governor llobert Lowry have their eyes on the place. There is no reason so far given for the determination of Senator George to retire from Congress at the close of his present term except that after nearly thirty successive years in pub lic life, 18 of which have been served in the Senate, he desires a rest from such exacting duties.
