As the Max ton Union of till week aptly re marks, commending ie which had been organized hi Max ton, they are n-t only 1'uilding and Loan Associations, but the "bo.-'t kind of savings banks." Thro' them many a man has been en abled to become the owner of a comfortable home, who without them would never have become a home owner. Wo know from experience that each one of the ingredients of this mixture is worth something as a preventive of hog cholera, and would ad vise our farmers to try it. Docs Fanning: Pay I The National Economist say? We were once asked, and that very lately, when the agricul turil conditions were as unfa vorable as now, to name fifty men in Pasquotank county who were making money by farming ana coma nave named more than fifty. And wo last week asked the question as to Curri tuck county of a Curri tuckian of intelligent observation and ho called over a dozen scattered ovor tho county who were mak ing money in different branches of agriculture. Of course farm ing requires brains to be mixed with the farin work but there is a simple process by which man can make farming pay with out taxing too heavily his brain force. In every largo neighbor hood there is some man, or men who is making both ends mee and lapping over. Just watch him and do like him, He's a man to be watched. Not for the ovil but for the good that is in him. Watch him day by day week by wees, night by nicrhl watch him and do like him. County Fairs are to make such farmers prominent and stimulate others to follow thei example. Editor. Agricultural Fairs. Every farmer should unite himself to some agricultural so ciety whidi holds an annual fair, and he should exert himself to become a useful as well as a working member. By doing o ne win nit himself up to a high er level, and it will stirnulato him to more carefully investi gate every new step of progress maae m agriculture. The farm er who always stays at limine never discovers the importanceof keeping up with tho times ; he win not realize that he is not at the front, but as soon as he be gins to work in an agricultural society, and gathers up the best products of his farm to place side bv side with his neighbors, j. e nnas nis proper level; he can see at a glance where he falls below, as well as wher3 he ex cels others. Nothing will take the conceit out of a man more thoroughly than to place such products of his farm as he feels quite positive cannot be excelled beside those of a neighbor whose products are so much better tin n his that he cannot help seeing it. A farmer who finds hi mself thus beaten will be very likely to go home with a determina tion to make such improvements in his methods as will enable him to carry to the fair next year products which shall come up to his neighbor's. Agricultural exhibitions have done much to lift the farmer out of the old ruts and create in mm a desire to imorove the breeda of farm slock, the vario- ties of fruits and vegetables and the methods of conducting his larm. lbese exhibitions have also lifted the farmers, up to a higher sociat position, because they have f urnishedopportuni ties for him to mingle with large numbers . f people who not only live in his own town, but in the surrounding towns. There are so many advanla ges growing out of tbesa anuual fairs that we cannot afford to do without them; yet there arw those who never see but the dark side of anything, that crv out against them as being of no use. Such will stick to the old;S,0'ls but carry a standard live of I ruts as long as they can, and 5 siffh for tho trnn na It , au sigh for the good old times when their grand mothers carded the wool for the yarn to weave by hand the cloth to clothe the family. Looking back they see only the few bright spots in the lives of their ancestors, while their hardships are entirely overlooked; looking at the pres ent they see only the sorrows, while the joys are entirely over looked. Men of this stamp are not usually found at agi icul tural fairs, but they are at home mak ing the whole household miser-, able by their continual fault finding. PROFESSIONAL COLUMN. DU. A. D.
