SPROUT. A SaniiNoniau at Trinity. (Special to TiiK Cavcasiax.) ' Trinity Collecjk, X. C, 1 February 1st, '90. j j Mr. Editor It is with cherished I anticipations that I look forward to the distribution of the mail on Fri- days to find The Caucasian. Its reading matter is much more inter esting to one who is excluded from thv direct current of neighborhood news. Even the advertisements are interesting and tend to revert the mind to the neighborhood, istuation or industry. There are four "neweys" (one of whom are we) who matriculated for the spring term, making about 100 students. Trinity is a healthy and pretty place. The landscape and scenery infuse a higher degree of ideality in the most sluggish or dormant. Within a radius of several odles, we can see houses, hill-tops and mountains, including the beautiful Shepherd mountain, distant twelve miles; just far enough to lend en chantment to the view. The terrible disease, La Grippe, has been threatening several of the students during the last two weeks, though no serious attacks have de veloped. It appears to be very spas modic in its nature, but the spasm doesn't arrive till just before exaui- ination days, then gradually subsides as the shout of the foot-ball team is heard on the campus. It was this writer's pleasure or astonishment rather to witness this evening the first game of foot-ball according to the ltugby plan. He had often pic tured in his mind the encounters they have from the vivid descrip tion of its technicalities by Thomas Hughes' "Tom Brown at Rugby." But you can imagine his chagrin, when he takes his stand a little be hind 'iBeefy Black." "Cub," and a few others, as "halfback," and re ceives the ball "full front" in the forehead, and then was ask'-d by several "Why didn't you rush and make good the goal?" But as yet this writer and student has been un able to find its goal, and its purpose is much more ooscure.
