John Jacob As tor, the Ameri can Cuesus, M-orth $150,000,000, died at his residence in New York last week. 'The original John Jacob As tor, grand-father of the dece.Jsed, came to Amer ica in 1784, a peasant. He died worth $20,000,000. It was he who established, at the solicita tion of Washington Irving, the Astor Library. This princely estate of the deceased will not be subject to partition like the Vanderbilt estate, but descends in a bulk to Win. Waldorf Astor, the only sop, whoso mother was a Mrs. Gibbs, of South Carolina. Prof. John Henry Comstock, the eiriuent naturalist, begins .in the New York Ledger of March 1, a series of six articles on the study of insects, in which he describes, not only those in sects which are useful to the farmer, but also, those which destroy entire fields of grain, cotton ana rice, and ravage or chards, gardens and vineyaid. He demonstrates how it was sci entifically determined that an ave:age annual loss of $30,000, 000 has been occasioned in the South by the cotton-worm aone; and that an average loss per year, of nearly $2,400,000, has been brought about in the apple crop of Illinois by the ravages of thecodlin moth. The series is profusely illustrated A UOVISItNOUSIIIP BOUGHT -A PRESIDENCY SOLD. The New York Tribune makes the following admission : Mny people fancy because Gov. Hill carried New York when President Cleveland was defeated, that a plurality of the voters in the State would sup port him again. But in that contest as people here well know, Hill succeeded only be cause hp was able to sella Pres idency for a governorship." But this is nothing new, for it la a notorious fact that the Har rison, Dudley, Quay and Wana- maker gang bought the Presidency. To put the ball in mo tion we will make a statement and ask a question : Statement Statistics show that the total wealth of this county Is greatly Increasing each year. The same statistics show that the farmers and laborers have been growing poorer each year for a quaiter of a century, yet agr.cultural prosperity is the basis of all prosperity. Question Then how is this wealth produced? We have our opinion. We would like to have yours. Col. V barton J. Green, of Fayetteville, Agent for North Carolina for the Davis Land Company, reports in the Ob server that thus far only six places have subscribed as fol- 1 ws: "Wilmington, $811; Fayette vllle, ?150, together with $100 previously sent, making ?250; iew Hern, $140; Durham, $70; balem-Winston, $40; and the ofneers of the State Govern ment at Raleivrh, with one other gentleman included, $G0 being a total of $1,372." Ihis is a mere bagatelle. It is not creditable to our reonl. Col. Green says: "When the bells were tolling throughout the State just two months ago, it was but a reasona ble anticipation that the hum total by this would have been larger." Men of North Carolina, do not fail heic. Do not trratifv the enemies of the great Presi dent by failing to respond in thi matter. Wil. Alessemrer.
