The origin of this day of practical jokes seems a trifle obscure. Iy some the cus torn has been traced to the scene in the life i" Jesus when he was sent from Pilate to Herod, then back from Herod to Pilate, which occured at this time Away back nearly a hundred years in the Clavis Calendania, mention is mane of the first of April as "All Fools' Day," and Scotland's poetry and song is replete with anecdotss and jokes perpetrated on this day, and among the Hindoos a day of fooleries, the Ifuli Fest, is also observed. Among the Hin doos all kinds of jokes and like silly species of witticisms are saved lor this day. The Boyle trial is ended. The Jury rendered a verdict of not guilty. We have not read all the evidence, so can express no opinion based on it. Whether the pitiable girl is innocent or guilty, whether Boyle is technical ly guilty or not of the nameless crime, probably n one knows, save themselveor ever will, out these points are not nowmaterial But it is material and high'y important to unaarthand ferret out if possible to what extent money was used to secure the above verdict. The first Ju.-y said, "guilty," convicting him to suffer death as a slteM r,en- anc6 for the blackest and most infamous crime in the catalogue; the second verdict is "innocent" sending him scott free and the rabble applaud Yes wliether technically guilty or not,yet by his own admissions he is damned m the eyes of all respectable men a moral leper, one for whom lynching should be con eidend a merciful fate. Editor Caucasian: The clos ing paragraph in the Messengers Raleigh "Special" of yesterday, says: -'At ll:o0 to-night the jury in the Boyle rape case having been out nearly two hours, rendered the verdict of not guilty. The announcement was greeted with great applause by the great crowd which pack ed the court room " Well, there are crowds and crowds, but what a foul gather ing of heartless libertines and profligate wretches that Raleigh court house crowd must have been. Think of it. A lecherous priebt of the Romish church, vowed to chastity, ruins a lamb of his flock, a Wake county jury s.iys he has done no wrong, and the verdict is greeted with ap plause! Great heavens, to what a pass things have come in this southland! Now it makes no difference whether the poor young victim "resisted" to the lasc or not, the iact that the crime was commited by a priest, and that it was consummated, too, in the very church edifice in which the priest officiated and his victim worshipped, made the perpetrator doubly deserving death. But, while a crowd of heart less vulgarians in the Raleigh courtroom my rejoice over the acquittal of a sanctimonious villain, it is somewhat consoling to reflect that.about all respecta ble people at this distance (which distance is, by the bles sings of (Jod, a safe one,) from the Capital of the State, reli giously believe that the time has come when it h the sacred duty of every father, son, hus band, brother or next of kin, to slay in his tracks, on sight, any salacious wolf in priestly vest ments who shall tamper, or at tempt to tamper, with the virtue of a female meuibar of his fold. T. J. L 1 S. Since writing the above we read in the papers that in less than an hour and a half after his acquittal Boyle was aboatd a train bound for Pennsylvania, accompanied by Father Charles of the Church of the Sacred Heart, Raleigh, which latter fact would tend to confirm the belief of many who have closely watched the proceedings in the case, that, from the beginning to the end of his trial, so-called, Boyle was aided by the influence and money of the Romish church. And who doubts it? Further comment unnecessary. FARMERS' INSTITUTE FOR SAMPSON. To be Held 4th and 5th of April. Twice before the wrenching asunder of life and homes and castles of trade the impulse of the gale fought impatiently to ac complish the work reserved for the whirling tiger of the air, whose avant couriers they were. Twice, for five furious minutes each, they strove, and passed on screeching in their bullied rage. Then came a lull, but only for a little space, and then the tornado tiew over the doomed terri tory, with terrible lightnings, from Eighteenth and Maple streets, diag onally across the city, crushing dwell ings and business blocks like egg shells, toppling down church steeples and wrenching warehouses to frag ments, the dread visitant passed to the river front, leaving, to mark the boundaries of ruin, a broad swath of wreckage and dead and mangled u- manity impaled and weighted down or burning in the ignited debris. Now who is this "Old Probabilities," be ginning with capital letters? Does he mean the author of the seasons? What else can lie mean ? Surely he did not mean to say that the mind of God became shaky and in this condition made his will and died; and the various changes of weathe is but the result of a big lawsuit be tween the seasons.
