The General Conference,
which is the legislative body of
the M. E. church, South, con
vened in ( catena) y church at
! o'clock a. m., on the 8th. It
was called to order by Iiishop
Keener, who is now the senior
lii.-.hop of the church. He
presided that day. The liishops
presided one day eich in turn
according to seniority. JHshop
Hendrix is by all odds the best
and most expeditions presiding
office. among them. JH-hops
Wilson and Galloway aie con
sidered the best preacheis
among the old Bishops, but
now they will share that honor
with Bishop JIaygood. The
Confe:ence was in session three
weeks, lacking one day. Much
of the time was consumed in
needless debate and now con
curring in what was proposed
in the way of changes to the
descriptive.
Thechiei matters doi:e which
mark the progress of the church
were the election of two Bishops
the election of three Missinary
ecretanes instead of one, two
Hook agents, instead of one, and
the establishment of church
paper on the Pacific slope.
That part of this State lying
beyond the Blue ltidge Moun
tains was transferred from the
Holston to the North Carolina
Conference, and that part lying
between the Roanoke and
Chowan livers from the Vir
ginia to the North Carolina
Conference, and th latter wa
divided into two Conferences
to be known as the North Caro
lina and the Western North
Carolina Conferences. The line
begins at the Va , line between
Rockingham and Caswell Coun
ties and runs with the eastern
line of the counties of Roskiug
ham, Guilford and Randolph to
the southeast coiner of Randolph
thence the southern line of
Randolph and Davidson, to the
Yadkin river, thence with said
liver to the South Carolina line.
In the General Conference all
the southern States, Mexic
I:azil, China, and Japan were
represented. One of the dele

One of the most interesting
and pleasant Masonic events
was that celebra ed at Clinton,
N. C, on Thursday night with
Hiram Lodge Xo. 98. The oc
casion was the conferring of
the Master's degres upon Mr.
W. A. Johnson, that highly es
teemed citizen o that place.
Worshipful Samuel Northrop,
of Wilmington Lodge No. 319,
and his officers, did the honors
in their usual style before a
large assembly, and all were
very much gratified at the man
ner in which the whole pro
gi am me was carried out. After
the conferring of the decree
and the exchanging of many
social amenieties, the lodge as
sembled at the refreshment
hall where the fair ladies had
prepaired a banquet. It is
hardly necessary to say that all
enjoyed the occasion to the
fullest extent.
The Wilmington delegation
numbering twenty-five was met
by the fair ladies and tho. com
mittee from the lodge, and was
signed to their respective homes.
The Clinton people are well
known fur their generous hospi
tality and the Wilmington
Masons hope an opportunity
will present itself when they
can reciprocate.
This social events has already
brought about some good for
Hiram Lodge as several have
signified then intentions to be
come Masons- Hiram Lodge is
to be congratulated on having
