Wad deM is one ui the most scholarly and polifhed gentleman in our State, and we know of no one who could be more competent to fill the position or would reflect more credit on himself and tin- University. We aie proud to note that two .North t'arolina hoys, (ieo. 1. How ell, of ( Jold-horo, iind H. 1. John miii, of Asheville, hoth cadets at West Point the pat year came out at the top of the li-t in their exam inations, standing tir-t and second respectively. This speaks well for .North Carolina und more especially for the hoys. After having heen class mates with hoth of them we are not all i-urpri.-ed at the above. They were I eiders of their classes at our State Fniversity and that means a good deal. The commencement exercises of the A. it M. College took place on last. Wednesday . The exercises consisted of eBsays from the students and short, 'rt'eU appointed addresses from many of the distinguished vis -tors in attendance. Dr. S.md 1 in, the chosen speaker to de liver the address, was unable to attend on account of indispo.-i-t'on. The display of handiwork and (hawing by the students was said to bp very creditable. It is poposed to erect a col lossal equestrian statue of Gen erals Lee and ('rant at Cumber land Gap by subscription. 14, 000 has already k-mu subscribed. The p oposition is we learn ap proved by some eniment men both in the South and North. While we would gladly witness the abolition of sectionalism in our country, yet we cannot con cur with those, who wi&h to adopt this means to accomplish it. It lias been said, that "the fox cannot mate with the lion." And e must say, though i-onie may desire to see harmony re stored by this means, yet we think that the vast majority of the South would fain see it con summated by r-ome lesj inhar monious method than the erect ion of a joint monument to Gmerals Lee and Grant A movement i s on foot to erect a monument to the patriotic Dutch-Irish signers of the Meck lenburg Declaration of Indepen dence. Many contributions have been made already. The object is indeed a laudable one and an opportunity to assist in such a patriotic move should be eatrer ly grasped by every true son of North Carolina, and not left to the good people of Mcklenburg alone. Let every county in the State co-operate and revive anew in the present generation, by erecting a suitable monu ment, the spirit of patriotism in our forefathers and to keep ever in their memory the fact that in North Carolina Ameri can Independence had its birth. Mgr. T. J. Ducey in a senium preached ir. St. L3o'g Chapel, in New York, on the existence of . - God. sas : 'The existence of (Jod is a mental fact. Fka.nkm.v. A I'AUD. Mr. Editor: I ask space for a short card with reference to th much talked of petition from citizens of Sampson, to their representatives in the last Legislature, requesting them to vote for a railroad commission bill, having been requested by quite a number of gentlemen to say whether or not I received such a petition. Replying to Senator Kerr in your issue of the 19th inst., you say that you signed the petition as President of the County Alliance, certifying that it was unanimously passed by a body representing 1(00 citizens' of the county, and that you instructed the County Secretary to toward copies of the petition to Messrs. Kerr, Stevens and Murphy, that you were in ltaleigh soon alter the petitions were sent, and that Mess. St ovens and Murphy had received their copies. Let me say in all kindness, that I think there must be some mistake about this, so far as I am concerned, for if the county Secretary in obedi ence to your instructions signed by any meoiber of citizens of Sampscm requesting me to vote for a railroad coimssion bill, it certainly failed to reach its destination, lor I have never seen it. I write with no desire to partici pate in discussion, between Senator Kerr and yourself as to the advisa bility of establishing a railroad com mission, my individual views on this as on all other subjects which came before us while in ltaleigh, were secondary to the wishes of the people who elected me, and I be lieved they were in earnest when they said in their conventions plat form of principles (article 7) that they were opposed to the creation of any new salaried offices, and 1 re ceived no'petition which would re lieve me from this obligation to the party which nominated and elected me. The House Journal will show that I voted on all three readings for the Cook railroad commission bill, which provided for no additional salaries and . hence no increased taxation. Wm. Ii. Muuwiy.
