Bryan of Magnolia was aroused by the sounds of distress by the foxvles of his chicken house, upon going out to ascertain the cause of the consternation among the xvinged tribe, he saw that it xvas caused bo the untimely and unwoleo no visit of a stranger of the same genus but of the owl species. The visitor however friendly xvas unable to commit any depredation, for the prove ibially xvise owl xvas huag ox-er a knot on one of the roost by a small steel trap, Mr. Bryan knoxving he had set no trap for the owl xvas surprised, and upon investigation found that his oxvlship must have necn carrying it tor some tune as the flesh had partially grown around the jaws of the trap. We greatly regret it and are truly asham ed f our connection xvith the affair. 11 xvas first announced that Mr. F. K. Cooper xvould reply, but on last Thursday evening Mr. Kerr invited the editor of this paper to meet him. The good people xvho came from all over the county no doubt exacted to hear the argument.! against the establishment of a commissionjpre sented by Air. Kerr in a plain, logi cal and dignified manner, ami our reply in the same manner, setting forth the advantages that xvould acme from a proper commission ju dicially managed. Such a presenta tion of the subject they had a right to expect, but we fear that they xvere sadly disappointed if not disgusted. We hal no speech prepared, for we did not know xvhat he xvould say. W'e xvere on hand simply to answer any statements or charges made by him against the advantages or rather the justice of a commission would guarantee and give to our people. On the other hand when ho opened his speech he took Thk Caucasian and its editor for his text, and prob ably for throe-quarters of an hour or more poured out the most uncalled for, unbecoming and vin dictive personal abuse, sharpened and loaded with irony, sarcasms, gall and bitterness. Those xvho have never had such language addressed to them do not know how hard it is to bear it with equanimity. But de spite all this, xvhen x'e arose to re ply, summoning all the self-possession in our poxvcr.xve determined to, and as stated, that xve would present our side ot the suhiect on a I112I1 plane and not to des.;ndto the filthy mire of personalities. But human nature is wck and there are times xvhen our best resolutions melt axvay in spi'o of our reason and better judgment; and so it was Monday, in ansxvering some of the reflections which he tried to cast upon our char acter and our paper, xve xvere dealing back personal blows after bloxv be fore we xvere conscious of it. X'oxv it xvould be better for Mr. Iverr and myselt for this unnecessary matter to stop right here, and such xxe sin cerely trust will he his decision. If he does not make another speech xve xvill not, for xve are satisfied that three-fourths of the people see the necessity for a commission and want it and don't need to be told of the fact. If he does make another speech on this line I shall be present to reply to him if the people wish to hear me; and if any personalities are used he shall be responsible for it, for xve xvill not descend to such a disgraceful scene unless he again suc ceeds in goading us beyond human endurance. It has always been a progressive, inde pendent newspaper since its estab lishment even years ago by Mr. Walter II. Page. Afterwards, un der the editorship of the lamented Capt. Randolph A Shotxvell, it had no superior as a bold, fearless, hon est Democratic weekly. For more than four years now it has been un der the management of Mr. Jose phus Daniels, xvho has gathered around it the best talent in the state. Its circulation has grown rapidly until it now has the largest circula tion ever attained by any political paper in Raleigh. It has gamed that circulation : 1. By piaiu truth telling. 2. By printing the news and all 1 the nexvs. 3. By having convictions and ex pressing them without fear or favor. 4. By an earnest and aggressive champions-hip of Democratic prin ciples. 5. By standing bv the rights of the people against any powers or cor porations. Recently the paper lias been im proved and giyes its subscribers more matter every week than ever before. In order to place it in every family in the State the subscription price has been reduced to $1.25 per year.
