He condemned c ry system of ed ucation that is- based uon the polish ing idea as radically ami wholly wrong. The polishing is secondary and -hould be incidental. Oates and Misses Mamio Ash ford and Rosa Culbreth, a committee to prepare suitable res olutions expressive of the feeling of the teachers in memory of Miss Lu- trude Clute, deceased. The resolu tions, paying her a deservingly high tribute as a devoted ana eonscieii' tious teacher and true christian wo man, were read i n i adopted. After short aud appropriate ad dresses by Prof. Joyner and Super intendent Royal, the Institute came to a close with these words by Supt. Royal : "We ought togive the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip." Tho sessions of the institute were attended by many in the town an from different parts of the county, sometimes the hall being filled. It va.i a success, and special mention is due Supt. We are aware of tho present state of affairs, and will you not nominate a man who will carry the full strength of your party? Why not nominate for tha Senate W. E. Stevens, wh o is the man to stop tho strife and save the Democratic party from a divi sion. The Farmer Members of the last Legislature recognizing the ability of V. E. Stevens select ed him as one of a committeo of three to see that no legisla tion hostile to the Farmer should be enacted. lie was Our townsman, Mr. D. 15. Nich olson was elected one of the Vice- Presidents of the State Convention in session in Raleigh last week. H. E. Faison. Eso., was the member of tho committee on permanent organ ization for the Third District and Capt. Win. A. Johnson was re-elect ed a member of the State Executive Commstttee. Mr. A. II. Merritt, of Taylor's Bridge, has been kind and thankful enough to remember the editor to the extent of a delicious forty-pound melon, and Mr. T. A. Hobbs, of of Halls, has been equally as kind to the extent of a jug of excellent cider. If all of the 3,000 gallons he will make is as good as this, those who buy it will get the worth of their money. There is something compensating about being an editor if he enn have enough such friends. I. 0, 0. F. A Clmrrh Excursion. On last Friday evening the Degree Team of Cape Fear Lodge No. 2, numbering twenty-five men, visited Clinton Lodge 124 for the purpose of exemplifying the degree work. While here they conferred the in- i itiatory, first, second and third de grees upon Judge E. T. Boykin and Mr. W. R. King. After the degrees were conferred the lodge adjourned and our guest were invited to Bass' Hotel, where our lady frientU had kindly prepared a splendid supper, of which all ate with great heartiness and good ap petite. The visiting brethren returned to Wilmington Saturday morning high ly pleased with the welcome and en. tertainment they had received. We were happy to have them with us, and return them many thanks for the excellent work which thev did while here. The lady friends of the order have our sincere thanks for the beautiful elected by them as one of the manner they decorated the lodge Loaru ot Agriculture. D. Johnson. The profits, if any, will be equally divi ded among the Presbyterian, Bap tist and Methodist churches. Mr. Johnson has procured trusty hands to take charge of all horses left at Garland. If you will carry your own feed your horse will be fed, wa tered and harnessed, and ready for use as soon as the train arrives at night. The train leaves Garland at eight o'clock A. M., and arrives at nine o'clock P. M. Persons from a distance wishing togo into the neigh borhood the night before will be wel come at any home in the neighbor hood. Ample accommodation for the excursionists will be made and nothing will be locking to make it the excursion ot the season. The round trip ticket to Wilmington will be one dollar. Don't forget the day nor the hour of starting next Tues day at eight o'clock A. M. Cooper is,anticipa- ting an enjoyable trip on visiting her sister in Augusta, Ga. We are sorry to hear of the death of Mrs. L. A. Baker's child of Rose- boro, ag-d about ten months. Bul- lard is going to plant hi new saw mill in Roseooro, which will givo us three steam mills, eleven dwell ings, nine stores, and five of those stores arc doing good business. Miss Mollie Pridgen, of Franklin is visiting Miss Ella Parker, oi this township. Mr. R.J. Parker, we understand, will leave for Georgia this week. We hope him much success. Ditch Bkidgk. MINGO. That dreadful and fated disease diphtheria again comes on, and re gardless to families takes three of Mr. John and Mary J. Hair's child ren without a week's warning; age eleven, nine and seven years respec tively. All that could be comprised in a dutiful set of children, loving, obedient pupils, meek, devoted child ren, was strikingly prominent in their exemplary life. The spring birds hushed their warbling, even the great light of day seemed to grow saddened, while a large congrega tion of mourners followed the child ren to the place prepared fur the riving. Carpenter, the lady evangel ist, has been conducting a series of exhortations at Goshen M. E. church. Hobbs is teaching a public school at Miry Branch, near this place. He had a vacation last week to attend the Institute at Clin ton. Mr. Frederick Matthis, an esteem ed citizen of this township, depart ed this life August 15th. He was about 78 years of age. He was one who believed in a saving faith and and lived a consistent member of the Baptist Church for several years, lie was afflicted by a cancer. Mr. Wade II. Butler, of Koseboro, entered Clement Model school last Monday. Mr. Allen Lee, of John ston county, entered two weeks ago. We are solid for a Kailroad Com mission. Lam side. We are very glad see our farmers ia this township so cheerful about their fine corn and cotton. We are nearly through with fodder. We hope that there will not be a single man, who has reached the age of twenty-one, who will fail to re member the sixth day of September, and be sure to attend the primary meetings. It is the duty of every man to see that the very best men in each township are sent as delegates to the Convention, We hone the people thronghout the county areas much interested in the primary meet ings as the ieople of Dismal. The greatest interest in this section f the county is over the Senate. Stkaavberky. A private letter from Kenansville says : State County Institute is in session. Miss Anna Bizzell, who has been visiting for several weeks in Wins ton, X. C, returned Tuesday. Miss Mittio Beaman returned Sat urday from a visit of several weeks at Wilmington and the Hammocks. Miss Phi Williams, who has been spending the summer in Clinton, has returned to her home, at Taylor's Bridge. Mr. J. T. Murphy, of tfie U. S. Treasury Department, arrived in town last Friday evening. He will spend his month's vacation here. Misses Katie and Kena Williams, of Wallace, X., are visiting Miss Lillian Chesnutt, of Georgia, who is spending sometime with her sister, Mrs. H. II. Britt.
