Com. JUSTICE MILLER. Justice Miller of the United States Supreme Court, who was stricken with paralysis about a week ago, diett on last Mon day night. He was born in Richmond, Ky., in 1810, and was graduated from the Uni versity of Transylvania. After studying and practicing medi cine for a few years he turned his attention to the law in which he made rapid progress. Owing to differences with his neighbors on the slavery ques tion lie removed from his native State to Iowa in 1850 In 18G2 President Lincoln ap pointed his a Justice of the Supremo ' court and he had served on the bench ever since taking rank with the foremost jurists as a constitutional ex pounder. Personally he was popular wherever known. He was of laige frame, sturd.y con stitution, a good liver, demo cratic in manners and humored. The News and Observer in speaking of Senator Ransom as an orator says: Our own opiniou is that he is probably as fine an orator as there is in the United States. Wo once listened to a politi cal oration delivered by Mr. Geo. Davis a Northern man stauding by us, exclaimed who is that man ! That sp&ech delivered in New York would- be worth fifty thousand dollars to any man. There was proba bly no man in New York who could equal it. Gen. Rinsom could not 1 avo made it. Some years afterwards in 1874, we heard Gen. Hansom at Metropolitan hall make a speech that Mr. Davis coud not have made and we doubt whether any .other person m the. United States could have equaled it. Two years ago this writer heard Senator Ransom nuke a speech in the couit-house, in Clinton, which wa believe no man in North Carolina could have improved upon. Many of our readers heard and remem ber it. Though of a political nature, it was a perfect gem of oratory. Strong men whom we had never known, on a .y previous occsion of tho kind to Hhnw t,h Ihjtsi. ejnot.oo. were moved to tear.-, and at its con elusion pushed eagerly forward and warmly grasped tho Sena tor's hand while tears of ad miration and grsi-titudo t.icklrd down their cheecs. Senator Ransom is an jra'or of undoubt ed great power, notwithstand ing the Rock ngham llocUet has never heard him accused of being such. KM i'Ki Oil PUT. Every man ought to be pig or pup. Tryiu,' to be both de stroys the capacity to be truly either. If a man in Eastern North Carolina can so fai lose his self-respect as to be an in dependent, let him vote the Radical ticket and get down in. the dirt If lie perfers it. Put if a man pretends to be a decent mau and a Democrat, let him show it by voting the. straight ticket. If he can't do that, let him make haste to o and join the Radical party and be false to himseif and his family. He raises his voice against the betterment of our educa tional system witnout making the first point against the public school of the State which are training to day 200,000 of the white girls and boys of North Carolina. Again Mr. Editor your con tributor protests against the proposed increase of this "'al ready oneroui taxation" with out stating that 12h cents is all that is levied on tho 100, for public school purposes, and without setting forth any rea son for making his protest ex cept that "not infrequently is heard the cry of distress and iiscord in our party ranks" and a whole lot about "taxed yes taxed until the brow of labor sweats m vain." He insists that "surely our public schools are doing well enough." Now we believe that it is not well enough for the Old North State to lag behind in educating her children and the fact that Va., Term , and all the Southern States with per haps one exception are outstrip ping us along this line should make all true Carolinians blusii with shame. We believe in public education. M. SAMPSON COUNTY. A Mass Convention of Democrat; Nominate F. A. Deanian for Senator. (Wilmington Star.)
