ever writing an editorial in opposi
tion to the bill, but mi vy have done
so, as our contemporary is "cock
sure" that wo are very guilty on
thet point. We meant to say, we
supose that the Messenger had not
taken open ground against free coin
age aud the Sub-Treasury scheme
and had not discussed them adverse
ly. That was, we believe,- in our
mind when we wrote the paragraph,
it copies and contradicts.
We cannot recall even now any
editorial in which the Messenger dis
cussed adversely the Sub-Treasury
scheme, for v.e do not remember to
have ever undertaken to discuss it
at all. The 3Iessenger has probably
said it was of doubtful expediency
in some paragraph and was possibly
unconstitutional,' and even unwise,
and savored of class legislation, but
it has never undertaken to esiabiis t:
this by argument or gone into the
discussion with any such end in
view. AVhat we meant to say, and
now sav, is lhat the Messeagor has
not discussed the Silver bill and the
Sub-Treasury plan as is its wont to
do in handling public measures.
t present we do not discuss these
measures because we .do not think
it advisable to do so, as we are much
more concerned in trying to prevent
a permanent and fatal split in tha
Democratic party than we are to
argue new schemes that may be un
wise and dangerous aud are experi
mental. The Messenger seeks tobe
a healer and not a destroyer.
.We make no comment' on ' the
above, bu! simply give the Mossen-
llurrah for the editors!' Editor
Polk of the Progressive Farmer, is
President of the National, and Edi

is President of the State Alliance.
