The Coklsboro Graded School will hold its annual commencement exer cises Friday May 25th, to which the public is cordially invited. The tal ented Superintendent and his com petent assistants have done u line vear's work. The school is one of Goldsboro's gems. Kev. C. A. Jenkins, of the Baptist church, this city, has been holding meetings in the Baptist church at Scotland Nick. The revival was brought to a close last Thursday night, 15 conversions and several ac cessions to the church resulted from his labors. The colored State Normal School of this city, held its Commencement exercises last Thursday night in the Opera house. The exercises were very creditable as well as interesting. Kev. Dr. Kives certainly has proved an eflieieut and painstaking princi pal and under his wise direction great progress has been made the past school year. A large audience assembled on the occasion and all were highly pleased with the pro gram, the address of Prof. S. G. At kins, principal of the Winston (irad ed School, deserves special commend ation. Walter Clark, who heads tie lay delegation from the North Carolina Conference to the General Conference of the Methodist Epis copal Church, South, in session in t his city, is one of the conspicuous figures among North Carolinians to dav. He is one of the associate jus tices of the Supreme Court of North Carolina. He has been on the bench for a 11 umber of years, and though a 011ng man now, he has won a very high reputation as a jurist. Jm ge Clark is justly regarded as one of the most cultured and accomplished citi zens of his State. He has been an assiduous and critical student from boyhood. He entered the Confeder ate army at the age of 14, taking with him his Greek and Latin text books, which he thoroughly mastered during the off hours of his soldier life, lie surrendered with the last remnant of the Confederate army under Gen. Posters had been mailed Gen. Vance appointing a meeting at the chapel at 7:30 p. m., but no one was present so we rested and enjoyed ourselves with our genial host and hostess. To Mv Fellow Citizens of Union County: I regret that I am called to attend a meeting of the National Executive Committee ot the farmers Alliance in Washington city on the 8th inst. therefore I cannot attend our county meeting on the 7th. At yoar mass-meeting, held Apri 2, a resolution was passed inviting me to become the farmers' candidate for Congress from the Fourth Con gressional District. I need not say that 1 appreciate your confidence and esteem and minful of the com pliment you pay me. Since your action I have received various solici tations from farmers in the district to become a candidate; I therefore feel constrained to accept your invi tation and announce that 1 will be come a candidate for the seat in the 54th Congress from the Fourth South Carolina District. Agriculture is the principal em ployment of a large majority of the citizens of our District, and I am not surprised that you should desire to be represented by some one irom your avocation in life. I have long since become satisfied in my convic tions that the agricultural interests of the country will neer receive its due aud proper attention until the hopeless minority of farmers in the national House ot Representatives shall be increased to a respectable majority. I shall not extend this letter. I am well known to each and every one of you, as I have been in public life before you for the past twenty years. I hope to nave the pleasure ot meeting all the voters of the Dis trict durint the summer to discuss before them the issues that will be considered in the campaign. D.. of Gnens boro Female College, who has been attending the General Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, writes as follows to the North Carolina Advocate regarding: the transfer: "The Committee on Boundaries after a full and thorough investiga tion yesterday, voted to recommend the transfer to the North Carolina Conference of all the territory east of the Chowan river within the State of North Carolina, which is now in the Virginia Conference. This re port, if adopted by the General Con ference will put every foot or ortn Carolina territory within the bound of North Carolina Conferences Thus the dream and desire of our Fathers will be realized. The mem bers from Virginia are fighting hard to keep us from getting this territory, but the probability is the General Conference will adopt the report of the committee and trans f er the territory. J udge Clark, who represents our North Carolina Con ference on the Boundary Committee manaered the matter admirably and made a telling speech before the committee. Mr. L- L. Smith, of Gates county, is here, and made a stron statement in favor of the trans fer. Rev. C. W. Byrd, of the West era North Carolina Conference, ren dered great help in the matter."
