Bnrkhart. of Tipton county, the Populist candidate for Congress, was endorsed by the Ninth district Deni- ocraey in convention here to-day. Rev. Dr. John V. Williams, of Baltimore, who had been on an ex tended visit to his daughter, Mrs. Prof. Gore, died suddenly last Tues day at Prof. Gore's in Chapel Hill. His funeral took place yesterday from the First Baptist church of Baltimore, which he had served as pastor for forty-three years. He had been made pastor emeritus only in last May. He was in his 75th year. Mr. Walter Garner, book-keeper for Garuer, Powell & McNeill, of Garysburg, committed suicide last Monday by driuking two ounces of laudanum.
