The KusiUn ThUtl-K. One of the most noxious of recent emigrants from Europe is the socalled Ru ssian thistle, Solsola Kali, var. tra gus. This weed is a native of Russia where it has long been knowB as a ter rible pest in the wheat fields of that empire. In this country it first became troublesome in the wheat-growing sec. tion of the Dakotas. It has since spread Into many of the western and north western states. Such is the magnitude of this pest that the Senate of the Uni ted States in the last session of con gress, passed a bill appropriating S1.000.000 for exterminating it, but the appropriation failed to bscome a law. It is the nature of this weed vhen ripe t lose its hold upon the soil and roll up into a ball. In this form on the level wiDdy prairies of the northwest it is blown for hundreds of miles, spreading- its seeds far and wide. While growing each plant forms a thick close patch killing out the grain, and may in this way ruin an entire field. The iifti'da pi this weed ara liabl to.
