The Dublic will rr member tLat when the press report of tbe lata lection were stating that McKinley bad iwept all tbe doubtful central western States by big majorities, tLat Chairman Uutler wouM not concede McKinley' election even after other campaign managers had given op. lie stated that he had re liable information showing that Bryan had made gaits in States like Indiana, Ohio, Iowa, Minnesota, California and other States big nongh to giro him tbe electoral TJtes of (hero States by good major ities. Eren when the State chair man in these States conceded that McKinley had carried them Chair man Bath r said that he could cot understand it and insirted that there was something wrong. ineoiuciai count ci lue vote in these States is now coming out and they throw much light cn the matter. The vote tabulated in Ohio, Iowa, Minnesota and Itdiana thow that there is something not only wrong but very rotten. In Indiana the following are the complete figures a? taken from the official returni: Democratic and Peoples, 305,425; 321,328; Prohibitionist, 3.05C; Oold Standard, 2,140; National, 2.2CS; Socialist Labor, 323. McKinlej'a plurality, 18,403; MeKinlev's ma jority,9,GtO. ToUl vcteeist, 037,040 In 1S02 tho tame totals howed the following vote : Democratic, 202,740; 67,000, of the increase. Itepublican, 255,015; Prohibitionist, 13,050; Populist, 22. " Tottl vol, 553,613. This show an ir create of 83 433 rotea since the last Presidential elec a ; mi mod. xnis is an unreasonable in crease, when we consider that the last Republican candidate was Mr. Harrison and tnat ho lives in Indiana It was claimed in 1802 that Harri son bronght out a remar kably full vote. Therefore there was l.ttle stay at home rote to swell this tremend ous increased rote. The increased vote would indicate that the popu latum of that State had increased a half million since the last election. was Jiu.&w cieveianu Trwi 175,401 and Harrison 135,411. In 1803 Kentucky' total vote waa 357,.- 057. In 1800 Kentucky's total vote was 40G.OOO. Of these Bryan re ceived about 202,981, McKinley about 203,410. In Kentucky Bryan received at least 27,000 more votes than Cleveland received in 1S92, and at last 30,000 more votes than the successful candidate for governor received in Kentucky in 1805. But Kentucky's vote increased about 50, 000 in one year. Where did they all come fromf Next let ns look at Iowa. In 1892 the combined Cleveland and Weaver vote in Iowa was 216.000; Harrison's vote was 219,000; total vote, 435,000. The total vote this 3 ear was 512,000, of ubi.-h-Bryan received 223,000 and McKinley 289.000. Thi was a gain in four years of 77,000 votes Of this gain Bryan received 7,000 and McKinley 70,000. This was a gain of 70 votes in each of the 100 counties of the State Counting five inhabitants to each vote, we hare an increase of popu lation in Iowa in four years of 3,850 to tbe county, a total of 385, 000! The census of 1890 gives Iowa 1,- 911,000 population. The State cen sus, taken last year, gives the popu lation as 2.058,000, a gain in four years of 147.000. If the vote this year was honest, and the census of 1S90 and 1895 cor rect, then Iowa has gained 238,000 soulsduring the bard times of the past year, whereas she gained but 147,000 during the four subsequent years! Could euch a thing as this hap pen? It is absurd and shows that there is something rotten in Iowa also. Another most remarkable phe nomena of the Iowa vote is found in the fact that nine-tenths of the 70, 000 new voters voted for McKinley. This jhcLomena was also witnessed in Minnesota, where every one of the 50,000 newvoters of that State voted the Republican ticket; and again in Indiana, which incfeased its vote 80,000, McKinley receiving Abstract of votes cost at an election held for Governor, Lieut-Governor, Secretary of State- Auditor, Treasurer Supenntendent of Public Instruction, Attorney-General and Justices of the Supreme Court and Judge of the Superior Court for the Fifth District, on the 3rd of November, A. D. 1896. COUNTIES. For Governor. In an interview tbe other day Mr. Hanna said: Our first poll of Iowa showed tho Republicans COO in the minority." In our opinion, the population of Iowa began to increase from the date of the discovery of this condition. If during the past year of hard times Iowa has had such a transcendent boom in popu lation, gaining 233,000 souls, what possibilities await the State if we should tvtr again have good times When tbe returns from other doubtful Starts in the West and Northwest sro ready no doubt the evidence of crookedness will ap pear. Had it not been for the frauds and this is unreasonable. Another I in the States mentioned above, it is ining mac proves tnat ttna increas ed vote is not straight is that nearly the whole of it is counted forMcKin ley. Just think of it, Bryan this year got 50,000 more votes in Indiana man uarnson got in xwz. JNow a man who could gain 50.000 of the votes that were cast for Hairiaon in 1892, would certainly get at least half of the increased vote if it was not bogus. It is clear that the gold ring bought up election officers and by all means stuffed the ballot boxes or made this increase in some other unlawful way and counted it all for McKinley. Now let ns look at Ohio. That State this year gave 475,000 votes almost certain that the electoral vote tf each would today be in the Bryan Alamance Alexander AlleghariT Anson Ahe Beaufort Bertie Bladen Brunswick Buncombe. . . . It is difficult in these times to fore cast political results, for conditions can quickly change, and a change of conditions can quickly work a change in sentiment or policy; but it is stated here- that so far as the terms of the co-operative arrange ment in the last election are con cerned, there is nothing that can permit the Republicans to bring the pressure of obligation to bear on Populists in the matter of support ing a Senatorial candidate, nor can the Populists claim any obligation from the Republicans. Each' party is free and un trammeled, and this fact is what makes ns believe that the right thing can and will be done in the election of a Senator. Qczn Docraro noi The Charlotte Observer of Novem ber 15th,-publishes the following: "The report in yesterday's saner of the Baptist State Convention at Morganton, Friday.- mnreeanted Rev. Dr. J. D. Hufham as saying: "The politicians have seared the dso- pie and made them think times were hard. There is plenty of mosey in the Baptist homes of North Carolina to meet all the 'exDensas of the church work." The Observer publishes the above with editorial approval. From the same editorial column of the Ob server we dip tho following: 'The North Carolina Prwsbvterian. referring to the fact thai the elec tion i over with, sayy.: (What we changers who were driven by Christ from the temple, would echo the en dorsement of the Observer and shout "that is the living truth." Some church newspapers and some preachers have always been against the teachings of Christ when ever it is proposed to apply them to present condition or too near at home. Some of them were against the cause of liberty and humanity in 1776. They took sides with the Tories and ridiculed those "who fa vored Independence as "calamity- howlers." At that time the Tories and money changers would pat on the backs such preachers and ehnrch newpapers and say "that is the liv ing truth. Instead of the preachers driving the money changers from the temple, as Christ did, now the money changers employ preachers who uphold and defend their swind ling game. They employ preach ers who not only wUl not drive the moneychangers ont, but who call every man a "calamity-howler" who wants them driven out. The Washington Post (gtld or gan) in an artiele on the outlook for the gold ring to control the next Senate says: "Upon the return of Senator Jeter C. Pritchard, of North Carolina, it now seems, depends the political status of the next Senate." , Further And in the same artiele the Post expresses the belief (bated on information which it claims to have received) that the patronage of the McKinley pie counter can t used to get enough voters to elect rrucnara. 'lhe Uatjcasian repudi- ates this charge as far as the Teo-1 pies Paity is concerned. No doubt j any Populist member of the legisla ture who would vote for a "sound money" Senator could get a fat job from the McKinley pie counter, but there is not a Populist member who would sell his vote for this price or any other price.
