A new method of etching on glass
or orce!aln has been patented by
Herf IletzlalT, of Uerlln. The usual
Oerman process consists in cement
ing a sheet of tinfoil to tho surface,! following
which Is then uncovered for etcn
Ing by a skilful cutting out of the
pattern in the foil, and washing
away of the cement. The Improved
plan Is to perform this operation
more simply and perfectly by chem
ical means. The pattern Is printed
or stencilled In grease colors on tho
tinfoil, which U thea fastened to
the glass by ashphat, and the pre
pared plate Is placed in an acid bath
that dissolves out the exposed parts
of the foil. The asphalt is then
washed oil, when the glass Is ready
for etching In the usual way.
Uy means of the microtome, sli
ces of vegetable and animal tissues
down to a thinness of about .10,000
of an inch are obtained for micro
scopic study, Prof. Elmer Gates, of
Washington, has now gone further
and even slices up bltxxi cells and
microbes by cementing them In a
single layer between two glass
slides and cutting the slides apart
with a very thin blade or copper
sharpened to the highest possible
degree. The fine grain of the cop
per causes it to take an edge that
no razor can approach. The cells
are again cut by repeating the op
eration, and it Is claimed that sli
ces have been made only 1-100 as
thick as the thlnnestproduced by
the microtome.

Selenium, hitherto chiefly an in

for coloring glass. When added di

a beautiful orange red is yielded.

Kumlnation or cud-chewing in
man, according to M. Xattan-Lar-rier,
is not known to be, as has been
stated, chiefly found in males. It
may be hereditary, and when in
voluntary is especially prevalent
among nervous dyspeptics. It is
not associated with special chem

ly occurs in tho weak-minded, but
in children it may bo imitative.
Some idiots bring their food up at

4. The telegraph, like the postoffice srs-

LAND.
1. The true policy demands that the na
tional and State legislation shall be such as
will ultimately enable every prudent and
industrious citizen to secure a home, and
therefore the, land should not be monopo
lized for speculative purposes.
"All lands now held by railroads ' and

needs, should by lawful means be reclaim

settlers only, and private land monopoly as
well aa alien ownership should be prohib

land grants to the Pacific Railroad compan

department, robbed multitudes of actual
bonahde settlers of their homes and miners
of their elaims, that we demand legislation
by Congress which will enforce the exemp

as well as before patent.
3. We demand that bonafide settlers on
all public lands be provided free homes and
be provided for in the national Homestead
law, and that no exception be made in the
case of Indian reservations when opened
for settlement, and that all lands not now
patented come tinder this demand.

2. We tender to the patriotic people of
Cuba our deepest sympathy in their heroic

NORTH CAROLINA RAILROAD LEASE.
We condemn the lease of the North Caro

Comoanv for ninetv-nina vpr nnt nnn
as a bad business transaction in which the
interest of the State amounting to the large
sum of $3,000,000 invested in good payirg
property yielding an income were sacrihoeu;
but we also, in most emphatic terms con
demn the hasty and secret manner in which
it was done several years before the former
thirty years' lease, by its terms, would have
expired. We call the attention of the peo

through the proper legal channels, of the
transaction, which was so universally con

classes of our ci lzens, when it hrst became
known. We therefore demand that the
nexi uenerai Assemoiy iully investigate
this transaction, and to the end that the
interest oi tbe State may be fully protected
as far as it can be done, such legislative
action shall be taken as to counteract, as far
as possible, this unwise and secret trans
action.
REMOVAL OF CASKS.
The removal of cases from the State courts

poor suitors, and therefore should be con
demned. Ve demand, therefore, that the
next General Assembly shall pass such a
general statute on this subject as to take
