Not lowest in price, yet the most economical ; indispens able to all who appreciate the best and most healthful food. Our country is enjoying prosperity almost unsurpassed in its history. For every one there is money enough to buy that to eat which is pure, sound, good, wholesome. Why should we use cheap, impure, un healthful articles of food? There is no economy in-them ; they endanger the health, they may cost life. There are reported almost daily cases of sickness caused by eat ing cake, puddings or biscuit made with the cheap, alum baking powders. In all articles for food buy and use only the best. The good health of the family is of first consideration. Alum is used in many baking powders because it makes them cheap. It costs less than two cents a pound. Alum is a corrosive poison. Think of feeding it to chil dren ! Yet the manufacturers of well-known alum powders are actually denying that their goods contain it. WQVAL BAKINQ POWDER CO., 100 WILLIAM ST., NEW YORK. A POINTED PARALLEL. The degree of recklessness or ignorance of facts perhaps both which some partisan papers show when they want to "illustrate," pass honest human understanding. The high degree of "respectability" claimed by some such papers appears to interpose no bar to such recklessness or ignorance. 1 On the 24th inst.. the people of Vireinia voted On thfi nn Ant inn rf nrda. ing a convention for tevising the State constitution, which convention it is supposed will undertake to manipulate the franchise something afer the manner now being attempted in North Carolina. The Democratic machine favored the convention. The Washington Post of the 25th con tained a report of the day sent out from Richmond, a&d the Charlotte Observer, on the 26th, had an editorial on the event It is quite natural to suppose that the information fwm Rihm the centre of the State, would be quite as "reliable" as the statement of xne vnariotte paper. .Lets compare the dispatch and the editorial- The Dispatches: "In Onlv a few section dn tha no. trroes aDDear to have bann ly aroused to the danger of havine their right to vote taken away from inemro eoto tne noiia in vnut nnm. bers." "A notable featnra of thn )aot is the fact that tbe Ninth district, wun its Dig white vote, has gone against disfranchising tho while the counties of the black belt almost without exception gave Democratic majorities." .'The vote for several reasons, vm not large, but the indications are that the convention nronnRitmn i ried Dy quite a good majority. The rain and the general apathy existing account for the small vote." "The ninth, a bier has crone overwhelmincrlir nevoid of The fifth is in doubt, but tbe indica tions are that it is against the con vention. The first is very doubtful. Northampton is for it, but other counties heard from in part are against it, and unless Accomac comes up with a big majority the district is against it. The Charlotte Observer: "It was stated in yesterday's dis patches that the negroes voted sol idly against the calling of the convention. ' "They (the negroes) almost suc ceeded m defeating it." Dtieordant Elfmmt in Flat In Marlon Fight. Marion, N. C, Jane 7.-The third public and most bitter qutrrel be tween prominent and leading Demo crat! as a result of the work of the ring politicians in their county con vention Monday took place here in a barber shop last night when the president of the democratic club and the present Democratic h ariff, after a hot dispute, fell into a clinched fUht and had to be parted "As they voted in Virginia so will they vote in North Carolina." "The moral is obvious. If the white people of this KtatA - m TflfU VJ carry the constitutional amendment, fcuejr must present a united front. ' l ... oy irienas to avoid the probable fa tal danger of a drawn pistol. They renewed the quarrel this morning and had to be parted again. The situation grows worse and the dissatisfaction more intense every day. Fights are growing common among Democrats here. In the re cent town election the chairman of the county Democratic executive committee had a "fist and skull" fight with another Democrat over the election, and several fights were narrowly ayerted yesterday over an alleged outrageous measure which was being prepared bv Democrat to submit to the Board of meal aldermen last nisrht. The DrniA. cratic board postponed the matter "till after the August election." When yon need medicine you should get the best that money can buy. and experience proves this to be Hood's Sars&parilla.
