Mr. Solomon Gay, aged seventy years, a Confederate veteran, died Saturday night at seven o'clock at the Boldier'ft Home. lie was a mem bur of Com pan E , 38th North Car olina state Troops, and was a na tive of Kocklngnam. A serions cutting affray took place in this city late Saturday eve ning, near the Presbyterian cnuroh. Jim hdwards, a negro, made an at tack vn another negro, Kobt. Jones, cut his tnroat badly, slashed him across the forehead and then fled. Jones was taken to his home and Is In a critical condition. The Baptists of this city have purchased a big tent, under which to conduct a series of meetings du ring the summer. The tent has been purchased through the mis sionary committee and will seat from six to eight hundred people. During the summer the various ministers of the city will be Invited to preach under the canvas. MRS. POLK SERIOUILY ILL Hi He ken With 1'araljaU at Her Home in ThU Citjr Monday. Mrs. Sarah L. Polk, widow of the late Col. L L. Polk, la seriously ill at her home on North Person Street, this city. On Monday Mrs. Polk was stricken with paralysis, since that time her condition been unchanged. and has VETERAN SHOT IN PARADE. LIU Slaer Then Takes Ills Own Rather Thin b Captured. Life St. Joeeph, Mo., May 31. The murder of a Confederade veteran as he was marching in the memorial day irade at Bethany, Mo., yester- diy, was followed by the besieging of his slayer in a house in the sub urbs. The murderer threatened to kill the first one to enter hid house, but when a score of men stormed the place he killed himself. The princi pals In the tragedy were John T. Price and Aultman Miller, his brother-in-law. They were both prominent men in Harrison county. Price was in the squad assigned to the U. A. 11. in the parade, which had just started from the city to the cemetery to decorate the graves of those who had worn the blue and the gray, when he was shot to death by Miller. He fell dead at the feet of the veterans behind him. Birthday of Jefferson Davis Ob served at Soldiers Home. The birthday of Jefferson Davis was celebrated at the Soldiers1 Home Monday. A large crowd was assembled at the Home, where the exercises began at 11 o'clock. Rev. Dr. Eugene Daniels, pastor of the First Presbyterian church of this city, offered prayer, and a selected choir rendered several appropriate selections, after which Capt. Den- son, the orator of the day, was in troduced. He made a very appro prlate speech in which he paid a high tribute to the old Veterans. The young Daughters of the Con federacy pinned Crosses of Honor on the old soldiers who wore th gray. Immediately after the ceremonies barbecue was served on the grounds. Quite a number of Veter ans were present from this and other counties, and a large crowd attended from the city. FUdaced Rat to Old Point Comfort, Ta.
