THE CAUCAGIAH tUleicb, N. G., Jane 27, 1901 Entered at the Toat Office In Raleigh, N. C, m necond-cUM mail matter. CIXIUIKNT LOCAL NEWS. According to the Apex News, thtt progressive t'iwn will celebrate the glorious Fourth in a mMt glorious faahioa. Tne entire community ap pears .to oe bent oo nayinc a grand time. The State Fair management ha e oied a contract under which thev ill give an 0tnch race at the next Fair. There are two of these f amoat birda that race with fast horses. One of them isdrrren to a sulkey against a running horse, and one is ridden and goes against a fast running horse. Raleigh and ricinity were risked daring Sunday evening and eailj Monday morning by three rery se vers storms. There was heavy hail in two of them, the fall of hail in tb second being especially heavy and the stones the largest seen in this section in many a day. At several places about the city the hail stone as large as hen eggs, and some old sinner who were hit by the stones, swear that a goose egg was abont the s.z of some of them. Monument to Founder of Wake Foreat Col leg-. Messrs. Cooper Bros, of Rtlelgb, have jaat completed a very hand some monument to the memory of Dr. Samuel Wait, to be erected at Wake Forest, N. C. The monument is inscribed as fol lows: Rev. Samuel Wait, D.D. Prominent in the organiza tion of the North Carolina Baptist State Convention. Founder and First President of Wake Forest College. The monument is made of the N. Carolina blue peatl granite. UAJOR MARTIN'S PECULATIONS. Official Iteport Shows Scab zzlement or SJ10.551. The legislative committee's report on Martin's Treasury peculations has been filed. It covers two periodi one from January 22, 1805, when Treasurer Worth took the office, to January 15th, this year, when he re tired, and from January 15th to the 3lstot March, when Martin, who had been itslructing the new clerk, left the Treasury. Martin took $2,225 trom the insane atylam, $4 554 from the agricultural department, $1493 from the blind institution and $1, 529 from the Agricultutal and Me chanical College. He paid all thee back by March 31st last. Ha embez zled $16. 250. 3 of the penitentiary foods which was not replaced. O his stealings $1,249 52 was after Treasurer Lacy took the office. The committee's report condemns in the plainest language the old system used by the legislative committee in investigating Treasury accounts, ar the committee has never compar ed check or bank books and hence really never could know whether there was a shortage or not. " Raleigh Business Direclorj . Who Should IleaJgn. Aibeville GaxetU. The Raleigh News ami Observer, ursinui political corruption In this state, suggest that "If McLenrln BewfBIr whoRe columns over will not resign why not let Senator flow wlth advertisement of bual- fiw-nara sena in his reeiztutkm 1 n men has more Influence In at- ntl appeal to the people of North tractlng attention to tmiidlng Carolina nl irt. fn I . T' Cr.r n,rove town than any other Ilannalnm, money control of govern ment." "J I ere," It says, "la a good opportunity to test the strength of McLaurlrdsm and Hannatem they sre one and Inseparable right here In North Carolina." The organ says that Senator Pritcliard's party "was repudiated by 60,000 majority In 1900," a tent of strength that should have sent to the penitentiary the whole band of thieves for which the News and Observer Is sponsor. That was a test of the strength of red shirt thieves and highwaymen, the result of which has cauaed the decent people of this state to hanz their heads with shame. If. any one should resign In North Carolina It should be the man who has stolen goods In his possession, in order that ine people may select a person of their choice. Mr. Prltchard was elected to the senate by the people at a time when a fair and honest elec tion law was In force, and at a time when no democrat claimed or for one moment contended thut he was deprived of the right to vote and to have this vote counted, while on the other hand F. M. Simmons was elected to the senate by frauds of the grossest kind, to say nothing of In timidation, blood-shed and violence which prevailed In eastern North Carolina. This latter Is the "Im perialism" that North Carolina Is acquainted with, the kind that Sim mons rose to power on, the loot from which has sustained the News and Observer. The time will come when the people of North Carolina will vote whether or not they approve this imperialism of ruffianism and rascality. Notice to Stockholder of N.C.ER Co. The second payment of the thirty- m mr m ninth maual dividend, due the stockholders of the North Carolina Hauroad Company, three per cental on the said company, will be due and payable at the office of said com pany in Burlington, N. C, August lUth, Spenobb B. Adams, Secretary and Treas. Directions for Colic in Horsis. Contents of a frmall bottle of Per ry Davis' Pain K.l'er in quart bottle. add pint warm or cold water, sweet en with molasses, shake well until all mixed, and drench will. Give about half at once, then balance in 10 or 15 minutes, if first dose is not suffi cient. This will be found a never- failing remedy. Avoid substitutes, there is but one Pain-Killer, Perry Davis.' Price 25a and 50c. i WHOSE BRIDCt IS IT? A OnMF Suit Becun By The Wake Co. CommlmoDerti A novel suit has been begun in the superior court of Wake county. It is against W. T. Rjchelle, and is for the recovery of a county bridge which was across Neuse river, but washed out by the recent freshet and carried bodily down the stream and drifted upon a bottom owned by Ro- chelle. He and several of his f aim hands went out during the freshet and chained the bridge to some trees, so that it could not wash further down or be torn to pieces. When the coun ty authorities located the bridge hi refustd to allow them to move it. The commissioners first offered to I pay Ktcatlle ten dollars for his trou ble in chaining the bridge, or rather as a sort of prize money, but he re fused to accept it claiming the full value of the bridge. Then the pres ent suit was instituted. The bridge was at Liwrence. It i a covered wooden bridge, ninety-six feet long, and is securely pinned to gether. It was erected six feet above the highest water ever before known, and was supposed to be one or tm moat secure bridges in the county. Rocheile claims that he secured the bridge while it was floating and is entitled to it, as to other timber that floats to Lis laud. The county authorities hold that Mr. Roohelle is not entitled to the bridge and that it does not eome nnder the rule re garding fixating timber. Annual Meeting- or Stockholder. The fifty-first annual meeting of the stockholders of the North Caro lina Railroad Company will be held at Greensboro, N. C, on the second Thursday in July 1901 Stockholders can get tickets to at tend the meeting with their immedi ate families by applying to the Sec retary at Burlington, N. C. Spenckr b. Mrs. J. E. Harwell, East Atlanta, Ga. DISASTER IN WEST VIRGINIA. The Coal District Flooded 200 Uvea JLoat A Whole Town Washed Away. West Virginia is now the scene oi a most devastating flood, and the news received up to this time indi cates that it may iqaal the memor able Johnstown disaster. There was a cloud burst in the Pukahoutat coal region. At Key stone, a place of 2,000 inhabitants; every house except one solitary bar room was washed away, and not less than 200 people were drowned. Thirty miles of the Norfolk and Western railroad track were under mined and destroyed. Many coal mines were flooded, and the damage to property will amount to millions. It is known that 300 mules used in the coal mines were drowned. All the details of the terrible disaster are not yet at hand, but there is a fearful condition in the section, and the story will be grusome indeed.
