Miss Mat tie Helen Reals, the Wichita tele- pnone girl who drew second choice of farms In the new Kiowa and Comanche country, has accepted new honors. She will become city marshal of the new town of Law ton, to take the place of Bat Carr, the present officer. Mr. Carr was relieved of his gun because he wanted to start too many fights snd run the town in a wide-open manner. A delegation of cltlseni waited on Miss Beals this morning and tend ered her the place. There Is a good salary. As she has to remain on her farm fourteen months, she ac cepted the place after some hesita tion. She hopes to tame the out Isws and bad men without having to shoot any, although she will go well armed at all times. She will oppress all gambling houses If possible. Tomorrow the big sale of town lots commences, and it is probable that Miss B als will assume her new position early Tuesday, the first official day of the opening. Miss Beals and Bat Carr met this evening. Just to test her nerve he Ired several shots. She returned the fire, the story goes, shot his hat off. After this little exchange of compliments the two shook hands and promled to be friends. A newspaper whone columns over flow with advertisements of busi ness men has more influents In at tracting attention to building up a town than any other agency that can be employed. People go where there is business. Capital and labor go where there Is an enterprising community. No power on earth is so strong to build up a town as a newspaper well patronised, and Its power should be appreciated. T.
