which all other industries mast have vastly more credit and his race in- giving the patient strength by
upon thorn, they occupy a com
manding position and are able to
dictate the terms upon which they
will allow business to be done. Prof.
Rogurs points this fact out very
graphically when he tells how it is
in the power of the railroads to de
cide whether batter consumed in
New York City shall be produced
in New York State or Michigan or
Ohio. This power is a hundred fold
accentuated by reason of the fact
that the railroads are all being
brought under a single control, thus
destroying the saving grace of com-petiou.
Judge Brewer says this state of
affairs is the product of natural
evolution which legislation against
t
trusts will not prevent.Prof. Rogers,
however, quotes with approval
a speech made by the lamented Mc-
Klnley a few months ago in Minne
apolis in which he said:
More and more it is evident that
the State has got to possess the right
jf supervision and control."
We do not hesitate as to which
view of the matter to accept. The
formation of the steel trust, the
railroad trust, the sugar trust, the
oil trust, and all other trusts may
ibe due to natural evolution, but if
such be the case it is high time that
the State was doing a little "evolu-
tlng" oh Its own account in order to
keep up with the procession. In
what way can the State exercise the
right of "Supervision and Con4 rol'
in so effectual a manner as by own
ilng and itself operating the railroad
systems of the country? Such an
arrangement, would be the greatest
corrective agency that could be em
ployed. Under It railroad rates
would be alike to all making it im
possible for the . railroads to build
up one man's business to the de
traction of another's, and taking
away to a large extent the necessity
for combination.
The trust question is live, it is
vital, and it demands attention and
attempt at solution. The near r we

THANKSGIVING DAY
Governor Ay cock Named November 38th
to be Observed.
State of North Carolina
Executive Department.
Ood reigns at all times and every
where. lie is our comfort in every
hour of sorrow and our strength in
every day of weakness. Id this
year the nation was startled by the
death of its President at the hands
of an assassin. He has given us
strength to continue- our form of
government without friction or
danger, a id has thereby made it in
cumlent upon us to turn towards
him in hours of trial, and tiue
who turn to Him always find
strength. It I needful, therefore,
and proper that we should eel aside
at lea-t one day in the year in which
to express our gratitute to Him for
past favors and invoke His aid for
the future.
I, Charles B. Aycock, Governor
of the State of North Carolina, there
fore issue this my proclamation, set
ting apart 1 hursday, November
28th, inst., as a day of Tnanksgiving
and Prayer, upon which day I urge
all people to meet In their r espective
places of worship and there thank
God for the manifold meicies which
He has shown to us individually
and as a i-eople, and to ask for His
protection and guidance in the future.
I earnertly recommend that on this
day all our people shall give as God
has prospered unto those who are
needy, particularly to the widows
and the orphans.
Done at our city of Raleigh, this
the 5ih day November, in the year
of our Lord, One Thousand Nine
Hundred and Twenty-sixth year of
our American Independence.
Charles B. Aycock.
