THE CAUCASIAN Balih, N. C. April 2 1903 Kntfrfil lit the Tout Utile in K!Mfrh, S. ('., An rnnd-clAii rnail matter. ik;kivki tiikm o.cem(i!E Editor r :bairltr nd f.hiMren Tblok That II Wn Kkl by tbo t'olit it (ao. Chail ty anl Children. What is tlio public MTitimnt worth anyhow? The Anti-Saloon I'au; ha xn actlvHy at work Tor moritlH. ch have bfn made, IfHxut' hav b'n forrnwl. Hixty thousand fctitionv h prayed for n Ii-f, orator and buMimwH men plead with the crnrnlttH, all po-s-jble re-iure wart brought to Uar and what did we get? Exactly what Mr. HimtnoriH and Oov. Ay coek granted Uiore the Ix-jflslature ojn-ned. No more and no 18. Hut where did all that public sentiment expend ittf-lf? It van ished. It rolleI into the ear of the committee and out aain like water falln on and oil" the back of a duck. Not a vote waa changed. Not an eye was ojK-ne! Not an inch of ground was gained, Mr Hlirirnons stated in his letter that the li'juor stills ought to le removed from the country districts, ko did the Governor in his message. It was done Ami not a thing more that was worth a cent. Which leads us to ask again; have the Hoplo no power with the law makers? None whatever. The edict goes forth from the councils, of the party, and the jx'ople have nothing to do with it. This is a line illustration. The jieople that Is, the substial element, the bom ami sinew of the State wanted the London bill. They would have submitted without a murmur to reasonable modifications. They asked for the suppression of the jug trade. They were denied evrything they ask-l. They wanted a gun and they got a tire cracker. We were all deceived again, We thought that this time surely the Legislature will hear. We fancied we saw a determination on the part of the Legislatuere to do the right thing, atid we aid m again and again. Wo beg our readers' purdon for our credulity. We were duped. The Legislature never had the least resjiect for public sentiment, and trample 1 the wishes and pray ers of l he HMple under their feet. The Democratic party is not stronger but vastly weaker because of the legi-lation on the subject of temper ance by the General Assembly now happily passed into history.
