When you arr cavoktino over the htate whooi'ino for educa tion an koadh don't you hear of more chi m eh ileino commited in north carolina than ever before and do you continue to attribute ti1ehe to fuhion rule? Not aince reconatruction days have we heard of ho many crlmeH of every order bt-ing committed in our State. Since our lant hnue we have read of a big fight on (Juaker Oap Mountain, In Stoke couuty, a half dozen or more participating in the fight. One man was killed; and three or four others wounded. At Ashevllle Tuesday a young man shot his employer. Near Win tou Tuesday a negro attempted raje on a white woman. Ntar (. harlotte Wednesday a lady waa criminally assuulted by an un known person, and the same day a mothers young son was kinapped At Salisbury Monday one man shot and seriously wounded another. At Dudley, noar Goldsboro, Friday, two men were shot, and this was near the town from which our Gov ernor hailed, and where he enlisted Borne of hU red-shirt recrulte. At the eamo time, at Wilson, only a few miles distant, the trial of half a doten or more men waa In pro gress for foully murdering Percy Jones a few weeks ago. And It will further be remem bered that Wilson was a hot-bed of red-shlrte. in 1800. Under fusion rule the Democrats charged the fu slonlsts as being responsible for every crime of every nature that waa committed in the State. Can it be that the fnslonlsta are still re sponsible for the great increase in crimes of every kind that are being committed daily In eur State ? Or isn't It simply that we are "reaping the whirlwind" of the seeds sown by the lawless red-ehlrta and registrars in 1900? The following appeared in last Thursday's issue of the News and Observer : "Hello there t The Ashevllle Tele phone Company has been merged with the Bell. Are we soon to have only one telephone system ?" For the good of those who have to use telephones we certainly hope that the time is not far distant when we will have only one telephone system but mind you, that system should be owned by the government, then we would have a much better and cheaper service than we now hae. For instance, in the city of Raleigh we have three telephone systems, .which cost the business men $ 72 per year, while if we had only one telephone system, and that one owned by the government, the 'phone service would cost our busi ness men about $18 per year instead of $72, and at the same time have much better service than we now have with the three 'phones. . - The Ashevllle Register, tpcaklng of how the Democrats view the ne fro vote, puts the answer in a nut shell in the following words : "The fact that a large number of negroes have been registered for the city extension election in Raleigh, only confirms the Register's oft repeated position, to-wit : that the negro is out of politics when the Democrats don't need him, and in when they need him." For the first time or paper ap peared last week with but one small editorial. The editorial was mar derrd before it reached the pnm that is, it wm left hanging on the hook Hut we hope our readers en Joyed the articles from our contrib utors Instead. CHIT-CHAT. By A. V. Dockkkt IlTfItration by proxy w some thing new under gol government, yet It 1 claimed that the oath wm doriH away with in come instances by rpgintrarn for the recent city elec tion, and jjple were registered by proxy. I'erhafM we ought to hav perpet ual electionH in North Carolina. At all events, they are becoming about as common as Celtral American rev olutions. Bo soon as this mor ing "th organ" Is s unding the tocsin for another election In lUleigh to run the bar-rooms out ol existence, and ptlll Wilson town has good gov ernment. It cost too much to run our Stat anylums sumptuously $20 per cap ita for boarding patients is four times as much as what a great many nane people are compelled to live upon. To fit big expenses higher taxes must be collected. Object of our "good government" apjiears to be to harrass every indus try, whether corporation, farming, merchandizing or liquor, In order to raise money to pay the salaries of the new offices they have created for their pe ts. Would RoIcoq Conk Ijug Mitcholl and Senator Banks be molifled with the tail end of the procession ? - As a sequence to the extension election, the internal Raleigh peo ple ought now to petition for an ehctlon on fence or no fence, and cut the water, gas, and the educa tion purse off from outsiders. Illinois neirroefl demand luntira vs. lvnfhlnir thpv hivo ornt Iwuf unnii good government out there as here. The Japanese are moving to open Manchuria, but should the ran opener guccewt'ully perform the ope ration, Mucovite8 we have been found already in pos-ession. Whenever a Republican sheriff embezzled, It was quickly heralded throughout the State; but with a defaulting Democratic sheriff to the extent of about eight thousand dol lar.,, all is quiet in the Red-shirt country along the Pee Dee. If it is not class legislation to dis franchise the negro, why would it be to legislate him out of town and back into the country, where there is plenty of work for him ? The Republicans will not need to distribute campaign documents next year, because the tax receipts will be the most powerful documents. It is doubtful whether the posses sion of enormous wealth, or to be in the power of abject poverty, is the most miserable existence. CHILD BLEEDING TO DEATH. Fatal It. aulta From Very Small Soars. i harlotte, N. C., June 29. Sam Mulwee, the fifteen year old son of Mr. John Mulwee, of lower Steel Creek, is at the point of death as the result of a slight cut on one of his feet. Saturday young Mulwee was raising a window, the sash slipped from his hand and fell, shattering several of the panes. . A piece of DroKen glass struck the boy on one of his feet, inflicting a small cut. Immediately blood commenced to flow copiously, and despite the fact that everything has been done to stop the flow, the young man is slowly bleeding to death. A strange fatality in connection with ihls family is that two have died as the result of what is consid ered small operations. A grown son. a strong, healthy young man, bad occasion to have one of his teeth pulled. As soori as the tooth waa extracted, the blood commenced to flow, and all efforts to check it proved futile. This deadly peculi arity in this family was first noticed more than 75 years ago, when one of the children of Mr. Wyatt, the older branch of the family, bled to death. The young man was at school, and had occasion to shamen a pencil. The knife slipped, and a small gash on the knee resulted. Before medical aid could reach him the young man bled to death. In punishing the Wyatt and Mul wee children, the parents were al ways afraid to use a switch for fear the skin migbt be broken. Hughe Captured aod Ag-aln Turned Over to the Lice. Wilmington, N. C, June 29. J. P. Hughes, white, who, with twelve other prisoners, made a break from the convict camp at Castle Hayne, this county, in April was captured and brought . back to Wilmington to-day. Freight Cars Duanpsd la a Hirer . Richmond, Va., June 29 An engine and two freight cars on the Seaboaad Air Line had just crossed the high iron bridge acr)ss tha Mje herrin river near Graiiby yesterday when the abutment pillars and two spans of the bridge gave way. The coupling broke and ten cars loaded with various articles fell into the water below. The cars filled the yawniog hole In the bridge sufficiently to check the progress of the caboose in which were the flagman and conductor. To this circumstance U the fact due that there was no loss of life. The fast Florida vestibuled train had crowed the bridge just ahead of the freight. DEMOCRATIC ECiOISM. Ojpomrmcr No NtM for Iaocrej North Carollaa Follow! la tha tHpa of XnitKk. A Democratic weekly defining Democracy, says it is the " Golden Rule the Ten Commandments the Sermon on the Mount, and the American Declaration combined." A leading Democratic daily car ries a blazing advertisement of a large wholesale and retail liquor house, and at the same time leads the reform temperance movement, backed by the clergy and laity and the religious press of the State. Hypocracy, then. Is no name for Democracy in our 8tate. This is the gang that is the leaders in the great educational campaign of whieb we hear so much. Is this the education they propose for our people? There is no nation so thoroughly imbued with educa tion as the Chinese, and this game education is the kind they are pre paring for us. Better define Democracy as rotten eggs, murder, arson, and the whele catalogue of crime, than call it the 'Golden Rule." Look at poor, bleeding Kentucky, under the Goebel election law, of which the election law of our State is a paralel, and say if you would educate us along these lines. Suppression of free speech is one of the crimes of Democracy, and they have educated us along this line. They suppressed free speech when secession was rife in the land, and no one could be heard unless he would preach that doctrine Yet the people voted It down, first, last and all the time, until this same Democracy fired on Fort Sumpter and thus left.no alternative to us but to fight for or against our own people. In my next I wish to tell how eloquence and wisdom were far apart when this, the struggle of the ages had been forced upon our peo ple. Junius. (To be continued.) ASSASSINATED IN TEXAS CAPI TA L. The Stat Comptroller Meets Death at Hands of a Discharged Employee. Austin, June 30. State Comp troller R. M. Love was assassinated at his office at the State capital at 10:80 this morning by W. G. Hill, a discharged employee. - Brutally Torture. A case came to light that for per sistent and unmerciful torture has perhaps never been equaled. Joe Goloblck of Colusa, Calif, writes: "For 15 years I endured insjuffera pain from Rheumatism, and noth ing relieved me, though I tried everything known. I came across Electric Bitters, and it's the greatest medicine on earth for that trouble. A few bottles of it completely re lieved and cured me." "I would cough nearly all night long," writes Mrs. Charles Apple gate, of Alexandria, Ind., "and could hardly get any sleep. I had consumption so bad that if I walked . a block I would cough frightfully, j and spit blood, but, when all other i medicines failed, three 1 1.00 bottles of Dr. King's New Discovery wholy cured me, and I gained 58 pounds." It's absolutely guaran teed to cure Coughs, Colds, La Grippe, Bronahitis and all Throat and Lung Troubles. Price 50c. and $1.00. Trial bottles free at all drug stores. A Goldaboro Family Narrowly. Eacapea Drowning- at Beaufort. Beaufort, N. C, June 29. Mr. Joseph and family from Goldsboro, who are stopping at the Mansion House, came near being drowned to-day on the Bird shoal, about a quarter mile from Beaufort. They were in bathing, when one of the party stepped In deep water, and the other members of the family went to the child's rescue. They were soon all over their heads and in great danger of losing their lives, as none of them could swim. Palmer Davis, a colored boatman, went to save them, and he succeed only by good Judgment and and he roic efforts. Mr. William Borden, from the University of Maryland, rendered efficient service In rescuing the Im periled bathers. WEEK END RATES VIA S. A. L. .
