One of the most brutal and fiendish J 9 A A j crimes ever com mmea wiinin tne borders of North Carolina occurred about five miles from this place, in Edgecombe county this afternoon. A negro brute went to the home of Mr. Paschal Long, who was away from home, and made an im proper proposition to his wife, which was resented. The brute then assaulted her with a razor, terribly cutting her hands and arms and chocking her severely, finally dragging her from the house into a thicket nearby and accom plished his purpose. The lady fought heroically for ner honor, but the brute strength of the negro was too great to success fully resist. C. Davis, the white man who in cold blood hacked to pieces with an axe and old man and his son, and his own wife. News & Observer. Maxton, N. C, Aug. 4 -About one o'clock Sunday afternoon four negroes who were employes of the Southeastern Lumber Company at KIngsdale, N. C, on the Carolina and Northern Railroads were shot from ambush by an unknown party and were seriously but not fatally injured. The blood hounds from Maxton were wired for at once aad a special train from Hamlet carried them to the scene of the shooting immedi ately. The dogs had ju3t arrived when one PTeeman. a white man. and also an employe of thi3 company, came up and surrendered, ac knowledging that he did the shooting- This is not the first shooting at this place of negroes by white men 1 and the motive seems to be a desire on the part of the whites to stop the negroes from working at this saw mill. Then Mahaffe ty decided he did not want to come to the Penitentiary anyway pos sibly because it is more pleasant in weastern North Carolina in the summer, but at any rate the fact remains that he didn't wish to come, so Governor Aycock pardoned him for $3000 which was to be added to the school fund. This case hap pened two or three weeks ago but we have refrained from mention 11 I A 1 ing it ueiore, as we thought it pos sible there was some mistake in the matter, but after waiting this long we have not seen the affair denied, but on the contrary have seen the report ofllrmed in nearly all the papers. It is awful to think that such crimes are committed in State, but isn't it worse to put price, as it were, on a girls virtue. The question is this, and we see way of excusing the Governor euner instance, it iuahauety wa3 guilty then he should have suffered a severe penalty, and if he was not guilty then the Governor should not have squeezed $3000 out of him because he saw a good opportunity to do so. It would seem that the time has come In our State, that only tho rich man can receive favors, at the hands of officials elected by the red shirt machine for if this had been a negro or poor white man charged with this crime he would have been hanged, providing he had been fortunate enough lynchers.
