The Deonle in North Carolina that want democratic "good (?) government" should take up a private subscription to pay for some and not tax the people to death to pay for its extravagance. Abbeville it is said has the best water and best system of water-works of any town in the State, ana Has a cheaper rate than many of the other towns. The city owns the water works see the point. You cannot sow thistles and reap wheat. When the democrats were marching about in red shirt uni forms, armed with Winchesters and shotguns and bidding defiance to law and order In order to get them selves in office they were sowing the seeds that have germinated into a carnival of crime. It seems to be the duty of the Bank Examiner in North Carolina to come along after the bank has "busted" and tell how It happened. DO YOU WANT MORE OF IT! The Raleigh Morning Post speak lncr of the ereat Increase in tlio as- r sessment of property says: "Two years ago this system ex tended to privato corporations and they wero assessed very much high er than ever before, counting capital stock and surplus, even when capi tal stock had been impaired and the surplus had become in reality a deficit. This year the system seems to have reached the towns and cities, and has struck the people of Italeigh with peculiar and stunning effect. We do not believe it has leen visited with equal severity upon our country friends as yet, but if the propaganda is to continue, it will reach them with equal cer tainty and harshness. It is a serious matter one which appeals to thoughtful x)eople whether the present system can con tinue, and we earnestly hope that the people of North Carolina may realize the significance of this move ment before the tax values of farm ing lands are raised in the unfeeling and irresponsible manner in which the assessment of other property has recently been raised. If farm lands were assessed in this State like banks, cotton mills, railroads and Italeigh city property is assessed, it would mean bankruptcy to many The lax payers all over the State are awful mad over the jrreat crease in their taxes. JUDGE riUTCHAUDAVlLL PRESIDE ThnA Imnllcated in Post Office Scandal Case to be Tried In October, Abheville Gazette. Washington. Aug. 8. Judge J. Pritchard, who has presided over all branches of the District of Columbia Supreme court for several weeks past, took a recess yesterday until October 1. The Judge will remain m Washington until tne latter part of next weeK, when he will go to Marshall, N. C, for rest and recreation. Judge Pritchard is fast making a reputation here as an able, impartial iurist. He has handled a number of exceedingly weighty and impor tant matters oflat9. Among them might be mentioned his ruling on the constitutionality ot the union station act passed by the last con gress, and his overruling of the demurrers to the indictments charg ing ex-Superintendent of Free Delivery Machen and the Groff brothers with bribery, in connec tion with the recently unearthed postal scandals. The problem of taxation in North Carolina is a serious one. The limit of taxation is as high as the constitution will permit, and the assessment in many instances more than could be possibly obtained for property belonging to corporation?, and for real estate f ituate in some of our cities. The situation in Raleigh is a crave one. With a tax rate that ranks near the highest of any city In the Union, we have great quantities of property assessed for moro than can possibly be obtained for it In tho market in any way What the effect of this situation will have upon the future of this notorious "star route" trials a num ber of years ago, which, by the v&rj were held in the same court room in which judge iritcnara presides. A late statement issued- by the Treasury department shows the country to be in robust financial health if the stock of money in cir culation is a criterion. There is now in the United States by Drug Store. $2,095,440,174, which is $29.55 perl capita on a population of 80,602,000, according to last estimates. With the water squeezed out of all kinds of standard stocks, as now appears to be the case, there is every reason Night Was Tier Terror. 'I would cough nearly all night long," writes Mrs. Charles Apple- gate, of Alexandria, Ind., "and could hardly get any sleep. I had consumption so bad that if I walked a block I would cough frightfully, a total of land spit blood, but, when all other city it does not require a prophet to why the country should advance at tell. These are the first fruits of the effort started a few years ago to raise property so that tho courts would permit a higher assessment of rail roads. Do you like it? Do you want it to continue?" The Post seems to think that this great increase in our taxes is made by the tax assessors simply to get an opportunity to pull the railroads for a big pile of money. The Post is presumptious in what he would have us believe he. thinks. The The extravagance of the Simmons- Aycock-Daniels machino has caused a great deficit in the State's Treasury and it must bo filled that's why our taxes have been Increased to iuch an extent. That's why it has been necessary for the State to issue $500,000 in bonds under "demo cratic good government." Four new and unnecessary judgeships have been created and men appoint ed to fill tho places with a big salary hung to their credentials. The Governors' salary has been raised $1,000, and other salaries have been raised and new offices created. The State's money has been spent to protect thieving registrars and in various and sundry way too numer oua to mention. And this is only the beginning. If the tax-payers submit to this in crease in their taxes it will not be great strides to a greater prosperity even than has been experienced since the inauguration of the present unexampled period.
