Judge Osborne held a hort session of court yesterday and overruled the motion of the attorneys for Curtis Jett and Thomas White for a new trial. At torneys for the defense then filed notice of an appeal, accompanied by a bill of exceptions. A stay of ex- ; ecation was taken for both prison ers for sixtv days until the Court of Appeals shall have passed on the case. Preparations already being made looking to the trial of Jett for the assassination of Town Marshal Thomas Cockrell, of Jackson. The trial probably will be held in Sep tember. After overruling the motion for new trial. Judge Osborne granted an appeal, and gave the defene an til September the 9 to file their bill of exceptions. Jett and White were formally sentenced to life imprision mem at hard labor. The troops broke camp, one detachment taking Curtis Sett to jail at Lexington and another Thomas White to jail at Covington. The democratic machine has brought .something ujKm the people now that is making even many of Its mem tiers "talk right out in meeting." Heretofore they have made their heelers" grin and bear it but now their pocket books have been touched and thoold "machine" can't keep them quiet. In Raleigh and in other towns in the State the property has been assessed for taxa tion at a much higher rate than ever before and In many cases the valuation has been more than doubled. This will squeeze thous ands and thousands of dollars of extra hard earned money out of the ieoplo only to be squandered as it were by designing politicians. The Ashoville Gazette of last Fridav contained the following timely article on the increase in the valuations of property : 'The arbitrary increase of the valuations of property for taxation is accomplishing bv indirection what the law forbids by direct act. The rate of taxation being up to the limit it becomes necessary to take a roundabout course to raise more revenues, and much property is assessed this year far in excess of previous years. In many cases doubtless injustice is done; any way the democratic demand for more money at Raleigh and the counties and cities has caused lam entation from one end of the State to the other. The delinquent tax scheme the going back into the forgotten and raking up taxables that were neglected in the harvests of years ago may also be a necessi ty of the Increased cost of support ing the kind of government we now have in this State, but it isn't popular with its victims. From nearly every county comes news of a very large increase in the as sessments, which however you measures it means a large increase In taxation, and taxation does not mean increase in business pros perity in fact it is an element in business life that more often quench es and dismisses enterprise than stimulates and invites it. Good citizens generally Inclined to con tribute liberally for the public im provments that experience hs proved to be of public benefit, such as good roads and good schools, but the danger in collecting more reven ues than are needed for government wisely and economically administer ed is that It invites careless and wasteful expenditure, the multipli cation of useless offices, the oppor tunity joining hands with the tem tation to use the public treasury to reward partisan political service regardless of the public i .tereat. The last two legislatures in this State have greatly increased the ex penditures of the government, so much so beyond the revenues as to necessitate the present extraordinary efforts to Increase taxation.' The success of these efforts, and the fact that the party now in power con siders itself invincibly intrenched In possession of the State govern ment, does not hold out the hope 01 a more carelul administration of the finances of the State " The penitentiary officials say they i i nave a large surplus or money hand. In Jtoday's paper there are twenty four of North Carolina's gifted sons advertised to speak at 130 places in the State under the heading "Edu cational Campaign." and many other appointments are doubtless now in existence for other speakers. To all of which I say, "Let the good work go on." But in the same paper, page four, is a short article. "Why discriminate?" from the VVilkesboro Chronicle that every one of these speakers ought to read many times and quote it in speech.
