When you are cavorting over the state whooping for educa TION AND ROADS DON'T YOU HEAR OF MORE CHIMES IJEING COM MIT ED IN NORTH CAROLINA THAN EVER BEFORE AND DO YOU CONTINUE TO ATTRIBUTE THESE TO FUSION RULE? A PROBLEM FOR Til K TAX-PAP ERS. , -The question of high taxes has become a serious one with the tax payers in North Carolina. A great deal of property has been assessed at more than its real value, while some of the democratic "pets" have not been assessed so high. We know of some property in Wake county that has been assessed by the new board of assessors at a great deal more than it cost, ami more than it could possibly be sold for today, while we have heard of other property in the county owned by a democratic official that is as sessed at not more than half its true value. Why this discrimina tion ? We take the following ex cerpt from last weeks Biblical Re corder : We will pass by the recent as tonishing assessment in Raleigh levied by three men who were no more famous for good judgement than they were for owning proper ty, and who seemed to be guided by the most optimistic views of the price of real estate within our city's sacred and unchangeable limits. We say we will pass by these gentle men with the remark that their work has done our city an injury irreparable; and it should be a warning henceforth to County Boards to select as assessors men whose judgment of the value of property has had practical exercise in the cold and shrinking realities of possession plus repairs, taxes in surance and care." (The above is on a par with some of the democratic registars in the last election. Men were appointed as registrars to judge whether other men could read and write correctly, before being allowed to vote, who could not read and write correctly themselves.) This is some of the fruits of democratic "good govern ment." Further on the Biblical Recorder says . The extent to which taxation has been carried in our towns amounts to nothing less than an abase and a wrong. We ?an never have cities under present conditions One cannot afford to own less than $250,000 worth of property in one or our towns. Owning less, he must work like death or flee to the country to make both ends meet." To flee to the country would sim ply be Jumping oat of the frying pan into the fire. The farmers have been visited by the tax assessors also and in the future when they need extra money for democratic extravagance the farmers will have to pay for the extra touches. In cloucluslon the Recorder says : We mast bring into oflice men who will conduct our affairs with economy; who will levy taxes equitably ; who will revise our present "system ' intelligently, to the end that citizens may with good conscience render unto the State, country and vity a just tri bute." The Recorder is tight we must bring men into office who will con duct our affairs with economy, but the voters of the State will have to employ some other method than the Simmons-Ay cock ballot-box ttufflLng machine. The first bale of new cotton was sold In (ioldsboro last week for 11 J cents It was grown on the farm of Mr. Offie HuHon In hampson.
