From Oar demo! Mi. Raymond Patterson, the VVahhinlon correspondent or the Chicago Tribune, is credited with the following as one of the seven teen things that must be done be fore tho negro question in the South is solved : Stop whining about the im morality of the negro until there are to be -epn no more mulatto children." This would wem to be very good advice to the democratic towns in North Carolina, If this rule was adhere to, it would at least solve ptrt of the negro problem. A man who believes In era tic promises would be a very easy subject for a lightning rod agent. Ex. It makes the democrats mad to talk to them about Grover Cleve land entertaining the negro Fred Douglas at the White House State Republican. Au exchange slyly says that the Republican cry in the next cam paign la not to be "a full dinner pail," but a fuel baby carriage. Ex. This way the democrats have of consolidating school districts looks more like removincr the means of an education away from illiterates than It does to brine it closer to them. State Republican. The ttfht cotton is celling here for 1 1 cents per pound and there is every reason to believe it will go higher wh-n the buyers are con vinced that the crop i as short as reiorted. We recently heard of a large tract of land being sold, at private sale too, for just two-thirds of the value placed upon it by the board of as sessors. Just think of it. And this by an administration that promised to reduce taxation Asheville Register. The editor of the Raleigh Morn ing Post is responsible for the fol lowing bit of news : 'It is discovered that the State of South Carolina is running about $100,000 a year behind every year now, its total revenues falling short that amount. Which moves the Charlotte Observer, In a spirit of neighborly interest to suggest that the State barkeepers bo required to double tho price of shorts." We would also venture to add that the same law hhould require the big dis tillory owned by lus State Board who does tho purchasing of liquors for tho State to sell to the State which happens to.be themselves according to recent report at a lower rate ; and also that the "blind tigers" located and "doing business" right along in the large towns and cities be requirred to regulate their prices by thoso tlxed by the State Rar Association." According to some of tho other newspapers in the State we thought the South Carolina Dispensary had brought the State out of debt but It seems we, or the other papers were badly mistaken. A northern admirer of Grover Cleveland said he liked Mr. Cleve land better than a certain other poli tician, because he always knew where to find him. OUR GRAND . The Wake county Board of Com missioners met in Raleigh last week and reduced the tax rate for schools. The tax rate should be reduced and must bo reduced or the people will know the reason why. But the ex penses of this extravagrant "good government " should be reduced in stead of trying to deprive our chil dren of an education. They should bear in mind that after 1902 all the white boys In North Carolina must be able to read and write before they can vote. This money was taken from tho school children right under the nose of our " Educational Governor". It would seem there is some charity work for him to do at home before going over the State again talking education. An Appeal to the Farmers of the State, by Secretary Parker. A condition and not a theory now confronts the tobacco farmers a condition that is largely due to the ack of intelligent organization and co-operation. We had as well look he situation squarely in the face and govern onrselves accordingly. t is well known that the Ameri- can ana The WiiKesooro Chronicle is credited with the following bit of information : 41 A list taker living in the State of North Carolina and in a county and township therein located, in making his returns, added the fol lowing to the regular oath to be subscribed in such cases : "I , do not swear or afilrm that my addition is exactly correct, but it is so near it that no one nor the county nor State will be hurt ; but if there is any mistake, I think it is in favor of the county and State." The gentlemen referred to above must be a democratic politician. It reminds us very much of the way democrats count votes in every election. It has leaked out in Raleigh that a member of the former board o tax assessors has changed the valu ation of certain persons property after the County Board of Equal! zation had passed upon the valua tion of same. This of course was in strict violation of law and was only done for a few democratic pets,' as though they should be protect ed from an unjust law, because they have some money, any more than the poor man should. Democratic 41 good government' means tax the many for the benefit of the few, and tax them high. sponsibility by saying they did as they were instructed to do.
