Aycock in an article in The World Today (a Chicago magazine) gpeaklng of the suffrage laws In North Carolina says : " Those com ing of age after 1908, white and black alike, are disfranchised unless they can read and write." Didn't Gov. Aycock and his crowd promise the voters in 1900 that not a white boy In North Caro lina should be disfranchise if the amendment was passed ? Why this change of base ? The Biologist, the State Depart ment of Agriculture, says the Texas cotton boll weevil has not made its appearance in this Btate and will not be likely to at any early date. He says the "weevil" discovered in the Eastern portion of this State is the old boll worm. This will be gratifying news to the cotton plant ers of the State. We have troubles enough without any Importations from Texas. THE COTTON BOLL WEEVIL. Tboarht to be the Same Insect That fa Destroying- the I toil la Texas. A cotton boll weevil has appear ed in Pasquotank county that is thought to be the same as the Texas weevil. The Elizabeth City Economist states that " On Wednesday Mr. C. W. Hol lowell, secretary of the Pasquotank Farmers' Club and one of the most prominent farmers of the county, was in the Economist office showing ua some of the disastrous work of the weevil. He had with him one of the weevils, which Is of a dark brown color and about the size of a potato bug, and several cotton boils which the bug had destroyed. Mr. Hollowell said he had noticed with in the last few days several dead balls in his cotton field, but did not know the cause until Wedneday he made an examination and discover ed the weevil. "The. weevil gives his attention to the well matured boll, just before it begins to open, cuts his way through the side of it and lays eggs. which hatch into worms that eat out the entire contents of the boll.' But this is not all. It seems that the mere touch of the weevil is poison ous to the boll. So much so, that if he even lights on it the boll withers and dies. " This is thought to be the same weevil that has been so destructive to cotton in Texas, destroying whole cotton fields as they go, and our farmers are very much alarmed. This is the first appearance of the weevil here." A newspaper in another town is reported as saying : "Now we have adopted the dispensary, let us all turn in and make it a success." We thought the object of a dispensary was to decrease the sale of whiskey. Special Calif ormla Excvrcioo i A party will leave Atlanta at 6:10 A. M,.
