Speaking of hi3new charge and of WISK AND PATRIOTIC. We take pleasure in reproducing the following editorial from the Charlotte Observer: Ve are glad to see in The Bibli i Ik'corder an interview with ex- Ooverner JarvU in which he earn estly deprecates the continued ex ploitation of the race Issue, which he truly says is distres-ing" and injurious " There was no f-ucb state of ttiTdirs, he continues, from '76 to '96, but peace between the races. Then the nfgro was in politics; now he is not; yet he is more of an issue, than he ever was before. "We are foo ishly doing our-elves great harm," says this wise, conservative old leaier. "Let us think on the things that make all over North Carolina there should go up an Anion to this sentiment. It Is true that the President is primarily responsible for the re introduction of the race question in the South, but that is no reason why we should nurse it, fondle it, keep it alive and forever keep upon it our thoughts which might better be turned to better things. Governor Jarvis never in his life gave better advice than he gives in this inter view." This is a wise and patriotic posi tion taken by uov. Jarvis and edi tors Caldwell and Bailey of course negrophobla politicians like Joe Daniels and Simmons will not ap prove this, but the sooner the pea pie of the state heed the wise ad vice of Gov. Jarvis and editor Caldwell, the better it will be for the industrial development of the state. nKoncrua nnI ltlHirnvPmPIltS hft COn- taxpayers of the State that we think te late8f llev. Now he is attending free chool and claims to be 20. "Which slatement is true? This is a fair sample of the working of that party which means to carry its end by any means, fair or foul." The above from The Shelby Aurora is a sample of how the dem ocrats in this state manage to poll their majority. Some traveling men told us some time ago that they were in Wilmington in 1900 and they voted the democratic ticket twice on election day, and they were not even residents of thi6 state. The democratic method of voting Is any old way just so they get in office. a ntti Axnlan&tion is neiestary. To . . . . 1 - a man who reads this statemeut and does not stop to consider what it means, it would sem that the State has an income now sufficient to pay lis running expenses and leave a balance of over one hundred and twenty thousand dollars. What are the real facts? To begin with, we sold three hundred thousand dollars of bonds, for which we received about 3 per cent, above par, or a total of $310,000 and we borrowed one hundred thousand dollars from tho ochool fund, making a total of Si O.noo that we borrowed. Thi: was part of that nt receipts which am out down at 2.2by,b;iS.ob as I . A f "V our legitimate income, wur ei penses are given as 2,201,604.31 deducting this 410,000 from It ei. o r.n aoa ua . rlnAjniir.cr mir le .'inmate income, that is, all we received except from the sde of bonds and what we borrowed, from this it shows that we collected in taxes just $341,965.45, or nearly three hundred and forty-two thous and dollars less than we spent. This is bad enough, but still the whole story ha9 not been told, for there is a special appopropriation of $200, 000 for free schools and $200,000 fur pensions, making a total of four hundred thousand dollars, 1101 a cent of which had been paid up to Dec. 1st. the time when this state ment was made out. Adding this four huudred thousand dollars to the $341,965 45, we have a deficit in our revenues of seven hundred and forty-two thousand dollars But we had borrowed $200,000 and the interest made that debt $22,000, deducting this amount from the State expem-es, as it is not leaiti mate and will not have to be paid this next year, we still have a de ficit of five hundred and twenty two thousand dollars, or more than half a million dollars, and the News and Observer calls this a fine show ing. raoraso'(sQDO Wine of Cardui cares nine out of every ten cases of the disorder of menstruation.
