A Ha4 Negro Ecpe from Convict Camp Yancey Strickland, a gincer-cake colored negro, twenty-one years old, Kt-iiteueed from New Hanover c unty, January 23, 1905, for a term of life for burglary, escaped from the convict camp near Wasnington, N. C, on the 4th instant. The State ha-H offered a reward of $25 and all iu--etary expenses for his capture, lie is a desperate character, and it took the Wilmington police a long time to catch him. He burglarized a number of residences in the boldest manner. Union Mines Bring: 1 75,000. Spencer, N. C, Jan. 7. The prop erty of the Union copper mine, at (Jold Hill, was sold at auction heie txlay following an order of the court placing the company in the hands of a receiver. The property was bid otl hy Guy W. Fox, of Boston, for ?17f,000. The company was capi talized eight years ago at 13,000,000. Head Too Hard for Pistol Ball. Durham, N. C, Jan. 4. A negro woman, Mary Jane Holloway, who lived at Holloway station, was taken into custody this morning to pre. veut her taking her own life. Yes terJay she made two attempts to end her life, a pistol being used. The only reason that she is alive today aud in charge of the officers, is that her head was so hard that the bullet she intended as a death messenger glanced oif her cranium and only a flesh wound was made. Fines Tor Crimes Increase Durham School Fund. Durham, N. C, Jan. 5. The school fund of this county will get more than ten thousand dollars. The amount of the fines in the mayor's court was figured out yesterday, and today the fines of the Superior court and the magistrates' courts were figured out. The fines imposed and collected by the mayor's court amounted to $3,264.86 ; Superior Court fines, $2,7 05.52, and the magistrates' courts, $748.71. This makes a grand total of $6,718.09 for the year end ing with the 31st of December. This is the largest amount of fines that the courts have ever imposed in this county in one year. Yss, Under the Wti Law. Lexington Dispatch. The "booze special," No. 12, due in Lexington about 9:30 at night, arrived Saturday morning about six o'clock on its Fridry night trip, and from reports it was loaded with pas sengers who were also "loaded." A special policeman goes with the train from Salisbury now and rides up the road until the crowd disbands or grows quiet. Friday night the drunks were all put in one car and kept there, and we understand that there were lively things doing in that car." Sloped With Ills Wife. Cherokee Scout. It is generally reported that W. M. Tabor has been killed by Will Led ford. The tragedy is said to have occurred some days ago in Ten nessee. It will be remembered that some six weeks ago we published an item announcing the fact that Tabor bad eloped with Ledford'sjwife, the latter taking her child, and it was to recover this child that Ledford fol lowed the couple with the above re sult. Both men are well known here and at Marble, where theyitoth lived. We have tried to verify the rumor, but so far have been unable to do so. Martin Confeaaea and Clean Powley. Richmond, Va., Jan. 8 Percy Martin, who was arrested at Hunt ington, charged with complicity In the recent Seaboard train robbery near Li Crosse, has signed a full con iession tha,t he alone did the work.
